"Blockbusters" is a short interlude of samples from the popular British television game show of the same name, edited together for humorous effect.

The game show is also notable for its game board composed of hexagons.

Samples
From an episode of the British television game show Blockbusters:
* Kathy: "??? I'll have a 'W' then please, Bob."
* Bob: "'W'. What 'W' was the name of Bob Marley's group?" (buzzer) "Wah ha ha ha ha! Everybody worked for it, Kathy got there"
* Kathy: "Waltzer."
* Bob: "Yes it is! Waltzer. Gosh you took a chance. Well done!" (bell) "And for those who don't know, that's the one that...people are spun round as it revolves. It's a waltzer. And you've got the choice."
* Kathy: "I'll have the 'M' please, Bob."
* Bob: "The 'M'. Yes, you may. What 'M' is a garden flower whose bright orange petals are u-- Yes, Sarah."
* Sarah: "Football"
* Bob:"That's it! That's perfect! You've done it! Terrific! Well done. Wowee, I was a little bit worried there. You did it, and here's the big prize, Kathy. Take a look at this; you're gonna love it."
72.30.79.125https://bocpages.org/w/index.php?title=Why%3F_-_Good_Friday&diff=5816Why? - Good Friday2008-11-01T13:43:56Z
72.30.79.125: Text replace - 'name' to 'name1'

*From the "I feel proud" speech from Sesame Street:

"When I'm with a friend / then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too. / When I'm with a friend / then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too. / - Me, too. / Right now, I'm the Loving Me; isn't he cute? And after I've done a real good job - I've cleaned my room, or something like that - then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too. And when I'm with a friend, and we're having a good time, then I'm the Happy Me. But when my friend has to go home, then I feel a little sad, so I turn into the Sad Me. Anyway, there sure are a lot of different Me's, just like you have a lot of different You's. Well, we're going outside to - outside to play now, I hope all the different You's have fun, too! Bye!"

* The voice has been distorted so that it no longer sounds like a child. Vocals come in at 1'57", and begin again at 2'56", 3'55", 4'54". The last time the vocals come in, they fade out at 5'40", at "anyway, there sure are a lot -".
** The original vocals found in the Sesame Street clip: MP3 sample
Limited to roughly 100 copies and distributed privately by Boards of Canada themselves via their Music70 label, 1995's Twoism successfully landed the brothers a recording contract with the highly respected indie-electronica label SKAM Records. Public availability of original copies of this work were largely thanks to the efforts of early BoC webmaster The Cosmic Crofter, who received permission to distribute back copies to interested fans through the EHX website and the IDM mailing list.

Effectively representing the earliest known official output from the duo (and almost totally unavailable until its repressing in 2002), the original Twoism release has been highly sought after and has been known to sell for over $1,000 in online auctions. When asked by HMV about the obscenely high prices the record was going for, Marcus Sandison replied wryly that "[s]ome people have clearly got too much money on their hands" (HMV Interview, 2002).

Some of the allure surrounding the release (and perhaps contributing to its high selling price) stems from the inclusion of a credit to an early third member of Boards of Canada, Christopher Horne (credited as Chris H.) on the original release. This credit was removed from the artwork of the subsequent 2002 reissue on Warp Records.

Stylistically, the album foreshadows what was to come on subsequent Boards of Canada releases, with two of the tracks (Seeya Later and Smokes Quantity) being re-released on later records. One artistic deviation of note, however, is found in the track "Basefree," representing one of Boards of Canada's few forays into industrial territory.
Twoism Trivia
* The cover art of Twoism is taken from the 1980 science fiction film "The Killings at Outpost Zeta."
** No audio samples are used from the film, so if you were planning to get it to check that, don't bother! The film's budget was not very large, as can be inferred by the way motorcycle gear and helmets were intended to pass as "spacesuits". You can just see the black "breathing tube" coming from the helmet of the character on the right, hanging down under the chin, though it's mostly behind the helmet.
** The frame is taken from about 5 minutes from the end of the film; Captain Young is on the left, and Dr Saunders (female) on the right; at this point in the film, these are the only 2 left alive. In the film, there are a few sequences where, as seen from the "baddies'" perspective, the astronauts are seen wandering about on the landscape as though viewed through a fish-eye lens. Interestingly, some of BoC's own photos of themselves are in that style. Film info, [DC].
* The channels are reversed on the CD reissue compared to the original vinyl EP.
* At approximately 2:16, a vocal sample (admitted by Michael Sandison in a Remix Magazine interview as having been sampled from a pornographic movie) is believed to be saying the following:

That tiny room at the beach was absolutely the perfect place for my first time. When we came together, I could feel the hairs growing on my chest. I saw my future. I saw my past. For a few minutes it was like being alive. They lived happily ever after. All my questions had been answered. All my fears disappeared. All that was left was a kiss. Every move we made was a kiss."

Comments
* A slightly different cut from the original. One possible meaning: sixty-nine or soixante-neuf, in relation to the fact that the lyrics are from a porn film; credit, [sixtytenth]. But it may also be significant that there are tracks called Sixtyniner, 1969, and June 9th (6/9). [DC]
Over The Horizon Radar is is track number 18 on the Geogaddi album. The title refers to a design concept for radar systems to allow them to detect targets at very long ranges, typically up to thousands of kilometers.
It has also been used as the theme music for David Firth's short online flash cartoon Scribbler.
*Old Tunes Vol. 1 seems to be sourced from a cassette tape containing a (presumably) hand-selected set of pre-Maxima tracks. The leaking of these tracks to P2P networks (Soulseek, originally) provided much drama on WATMM.
These tracks appear to have first surfaced on SoulSeek under various name1s, such as "random 35 track tape (rarities and the best of - not old tunes v1 or v2)" and "A Few Older Tunes Disc 1/Disc 2", reflecting the uncertainty of the collection's provenance. Early sightings include:
* Noatak village is the only substantial settlement on the Noatak river, 55 miles north of Kotzebue; it is an Inupiat Eskimo village where more than 90% of the population are native Alaskans. The original name1 was Noatagamut, meaning "inland river people". Noatak National Preserve is located in Western Arctic National Parklands, to the east of the village. [DC]

The following is taken from Forcefield Magazine, April 1998:

"We sometimes make a tune metamorphose as it plays. An example is "Nlogax" from the "Hi Scores" EP on Skam, which begins like an old electro or disco track but halfway through it suddenly becomes something nightmarish, like your brain is starting to malfunction in the middle of the tune. Psychedelics make music sound entirely different. Tiny details become massive, a five-minute track can feel like it's five hours long on psychedelics. You know when you're on a ride at a fairground, the pitch of the music rises and falls because of the Doppler-Effect? That's another thing we love to do in our tracks, and it's a fairly psychedelic-sounding effect too."
*A sample of a woman giggling followed by two metallic-sounding high notes, which occurs at 0:22 and every 2 seconds thereafter, is also used at the end of The Color of the Fire.

Comments
* The lyrics mention William T. Love, a real person who planned the canal described in the track, but did not finish it. The site later became the focus of an (unrelated) major environmental calamity. Probably the most objectionable part of this was the "Hooker Clause" by means of which the corporation attempted to absolve itself of any future blame (see the second article). [DC]
* [ianlanterman] for the observation that a "cooly" (French "coulee") is a geographical feature common in the Alberta area (there is a Devil's Coulee, an East Coulee, and others, in Alberta). It is a kind of arroyo or gully, so the title might refer to it becoming frozen in winter. Other possibilities: [DC] is fairly sure that a cooly is a sort of drink; hence, a cooly with ice in it, though this is not confirmed.
Comments
* The late, popular folk singer Nick Drake wrote a song titled "Saturday Sun" which appears on his album "Five Leaves Left".

Samples/Lyrics
* Throughout the song, there is an underlying drone sound. It bears a strong resemblance to the drone heard in the cabin of an airliner during travel. Given that images of airliners appear in the album artwork for The Campfire Headphase, and the second following track is titled "Slow This Bird Down", it is reasonable to speculate that this sample source is accurate.

Hexagon Sun is the artistic collective which exists around Boards of Canada, as well as the name1 of their studio.

Facts
*The collective includes both Mike and Marcus Sandison.
**They produce work in many mediums, primarily audio and video, as mentioned in interviews.
**These tend to be exhibited at RedMoon parties.
**Peter Iain Campbell and Goderich are presumably members.
* "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" on Music has the Right to Children is an obvious reference to the collective.
**Frazer Clarke may be a member, or an ex-member.
**Membership may be a somewhat loose concept.
*Live Recordings:
The Geogaddi test pressing was a 12" vinyl disc containing sides E and F of the album Geogaddi by Boards of Canada. It was pressed on blue vinyl and was pressed the scant number of 10 times. Just as in Geogaddi, side F was grooveless and had the nuclear family pictogram etched into it.

Early vs. Late Releases
Boards of Canada's discography essentially falls in two camps.
*The well-known releases that followed after the duo were signed, first to SKAM and then to Warp Records, which can be purchased in any decent record shop.
*The releases which precede this, of which original copies are exceptionally rare. Much of the knowledge we have of the latter is due to The Cosmic Crofter's webpage, which is now defunct.
**The exceptions: copies of Maxima and the "Old Tunes" tapes which are almost certainly legitimate are readily available on the p2p networks.
** These older items are NOT AVAILABLE; only friends and family of BoC have heard them.
*** In addition, three extracts of genuine old tracks came from a BoC-related website that no longer exists. They are: "duffy" (extract) (0:24), Wouldn't You Like To Be Free (extract) (0:56), circle (extract) (0:35), duffy is a gentle and innocent track a little bit similar to Melissa Juice; "wouldn't you like to be free?" features massed guitars; "circle" has slowly changing high-pitched glacial tones, fitting the Alaskan theme of the album it comes from.

Fakes
* Many albums which purport to be other rare releases are commonplace too, but almost without exception, these have proven to be fakes of varying qualities so far.
** Among the fakes, the most common are eno test and parson, wrongly taken to be by Marumari and BoC, whereas they are by Marumari alone. A few other such mis-labelled tracks go around from time to time.
*** Stry Craty Bya (as seen here, for instance) is actually eno test.
** Other fakes include a longer version of circle which sounds nothing like the genuine short extract. trillions (3:31) is a fake, as is treeline '(1:12).
** Another set of fake MP3s that went around were called nskino, gridlock, lavender trapezoids, golden hinterland, rhomboid, and maybe some more. We've been told that these are mislabeled tracks by CiM nskino is really disco alta, rhomboid is really isempty, and so on (thanks, MCBPete). With any luck, the fakes will eventually stop being labelled as BoC.
** "Slow Bicycle," a song by múm, is often mislabeled as Seward Leaf.
** A recent fake that surfaced is the track Sur Round , --Fredd-E 15:00, 25 August 2008 (CEST)
As Hell Interface
The Hell Interface side-project seems to be more in the nature of a remix project than Boards of Canada proper. The works released under the HI name1 are: remixes of Colonel Abrams' Trapped and of Midnight Star's Midas Touch, and a strange little speech-only track called The Story of Xentrix. Can this last track be described as a remix? Most of the speech seems to be synthesized; however, the last few words sound rather different - perhaps from another source (just speculation).

There used to be link here to an animated trailer here, for a program called "Zentrix", which was taken down after a while. By request, here it is again (be aware that the trailer is not necessarily related to the Hell Interface track, except by the similarity of name1s). The trailer can be found at the Zentrix site .
Closes Vol. 1 is Boards of Canada's third known release. It has been said that the album is "even less imposing" than the band's first known release, Catalog 3.

The album has not been heard by those outside of the band's family and friends. MP3s labeled "Godever" (1:46), "Treeline" (1:12), and "Trillions" (3:31) are not the tracks from Closes Vol. 1; the latter two are definitely not by Boards of Canada.

4 tracks have the title Close1 through Close4. Some track titles have mathematical connotations: Tends Towards (from analysis, limits, etc.), Numerator (fractions), Trillions, 5d (5-dimensional).
