"The Smallest Weird Number" is track number 9 on the album Geogaddi. An excerpt of the track appears in the video portion of the Trans Canada Highway Microsite.

Comments
* "The Smallest Weird Number" is 70. As in Music70, BoC's own label. A "weird number" is a number that is "abundant" but not "semi-perfect". Meaning? Take all the "proper divisors" of 70 (i.e. all the divisors of 70 except for 70 itself). They are 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 14, 35. When the proper divisors add up to more than the original number, the original number is said to be abundant. For 70: 1+2+5+7+10+14+35 = 74 > 70, so 70 is "abundant". Now, if there was some SUBSET of these numbers 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 14, 35 which added up to 70, then 70 would be said to be "semi-perfect" (or "pseudoperfect") But there isn't. Try it. You can make 71 by missing out the 1 and the 2, or you can make 69 by missing out the 5, but you can't make 70. I hope that explanation is clear. The first few weird numbers are: 70, 836, 4030, 5830, 7192, 7912, 9272, 10430, 10570, 10792. You can find a longer list of weird numbers in the "online encyclopedia of integer sequences", from which my shorter listing was taken. This explanation of weird numbers by [DC].
* Even though the track runs for 1:17, the melody cuts out at exactly 1:10 (70 seconds).

Samples / Lyrics
*At 0:03, the ending of "When the Music Starts to Play" by Incredible String Band is heard in reverse and at a lower speed. The sample seems to have been taken from an old phonograph record, as crackling is present.
* From the beginning until around 0:18, the song samples birds singing in the documentary "On the Tracks of the Wild Otter (1983)". The sample can be heard at around 26:53.
* The main melody is the same as "B10", except in reverse. Reverb has been applied to the last chord heard in the present track.
* The main melody is layered over itself at half speed throughout the track. This was discovered by The Magic Window discord user personman.

Trivia
* In mathematics, the smallest weird number is 70. 70 is part of the name of the band's private label (music70); "sixtyten" is another way of saying 70.
* [Simon Wilkinson] suggests that this might be a recording from a native American ceremony, including what sounds like someone with a drum - see also comments on "Pete Standing Alone".
* In fact, the company was called "Kainai Industries" Ltd. It was located on the Blood Reserve. There was also a Kainai Cooperative Enterprises. "Kainai" means "many chiefs", and the Kainai are also known as the Blood Nation. *A possible source for the end sample may have been from the collection of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the same label of other samples found in Geogaddi (see: A Is To B As B Is To C, and From One Source All Things Depend). A strong candidate of the source is from the album: Music of the Jívaro of Ecuador (1972). The sample may be the combination of two tracks: Calling an Enemy's Arutam Soul (Log Signal Drum Solo) and Song of Kungi, the Flute Bird (Flute Solo). They're both lowered in pitch and sliced/sampled. Here is a close representation:
And here, for comparison, is the above sample along with the Kaini Industries sample:

Similar sounding sources to the end sample can also be heard here: 'Mbilta Solo (Eritrea) · Mbilta players from Gura Valley, Eritrea, or Music from Ethiopia..

Trivia
* As explained by Boards of Canada: Kaini Industries is a company that was set up in wikipedia:Canada (by coincidence in the month Mike was born), to create employment for a settlement of Cree Indians (Forcefield 1998).
* This track appears solely on a 1998 compilation album of various Warp artists, titled "We Are Reasonable People." It is the second track from said album.
* This track features a sample, also used in "On A Rolling Sea", which was formerly thought to have been a crowd of people saying "Wow!". Twoism user WaitingFor_22 discovered that it is, in fact, a sample from a Sesame Street episode where a group of kids, along with Big Bird, Snuffleupagus and the Word Fairy, say "Fly!"
"Turquoise Hexagon Sun" is a song by Boards of Canada. First appearing as the eighteenth track on the duo's limited-release Boc Maxima, it was more widely re-released later that year as the second track on the EP Hi Scores. It also appears as the seventh track on their debut studio album, Music Has the Right to Children. It is one of Boards of Canada's most well-known songs.
Comments
* [Evan Snyder] gave me this interesting link on the subject on lens flares. The number of blades making up the aperture of the lens influences the shape of the lens flare produced, so that a six-bladed aperture, for example, would produce a hexagonal sun flare effect. Evan suggests the possibility that the name was inspired by a documentary, or even one of Hexagon Sun's own films, with special meaning to BoC, featuring a prominent turquoise hexagonal sun flare. An intriguing possibility, and a very interesting link. (You can also find photos fitting this description at Warp Records - go to Artists, BoC, and look at the Gallery photos).
* Not specifically in relation to this track, but in a wider sense (Hexagon Sun, the kaleidoscopic images on Geogaddi, etc), here are comments from the NME Interview:
<blockquote>
"What's the significance of hexagons to you?"<br />
"Marcus: "The hexagon theme represents that whole idea of being able to see reality for what it is, the raw maths or patterns that make everything. We've always been interested in science and maths. Sometimes music or art or drugs can pull back the curtain for you and reveal the Wizard of Oz, so to speak, busy pushing the levers and pressing buttons. That's what maths is, the wizard. It sounds like nonsense but I'm sure a lot of people know what I'm talking about."
</blockquote>

* Saturn. Saturday. Saturn-day. Sun. Some speculate that Saturn used to be our sun. Or that it’s some sort of supercomputer projecting our reality via its rings, maybe with the signal bounced off the moon? Saturn = Satan? There is a turquoise hexagon at one of the poles of Saturn. Maybe this is what they are referencing? https://www.businessinsider.com/saturn-hexagon-storm-images-2017-5

Samples / Lyrics
* Shares a drum sample almost completely with "Orange Hexagon Sun".
* Various bits of speech, repeated elsewhere in the track. It's hard to make out much, but here's [DC]'s guess at some of it:
<blockquote>
"there's been a [release/leak]"? [female voice near start] - 0:36, 1:58<br />
"Oh, ... I know" [Scottish girl] - 1:14, 2:35<br />
"Just slightly" [different Scottish girl] - 4:29<br />
"... just [come in at the] end, right?" [English man] - 4:19<br />
"fan - tastic" [same man?] - at about 4:38.<br />
</blockquote>
* The girl speaking at about 1:22 and 2:44 sounds (to me) like the same one who speaks all the way through all 3 live recordings of BoC at ATP, Lighthouse, and Warp - which adds to suspicions that these are recordings of people talking at the Hexagon Sun studio, as the title of the track would suggest.

Trivia
*The synth melody that appears at 3 min & 14 sec into this track is similar to the synth melody that appears at 2 min & 49 sec into the track "Sunshine Recorder" from Geogaddi.
*"Hexagon Sun" refers to the studio of Boards of Canada in East Scotland, but also to the collective of musicians and friends of Michael and Marcus.
*This song has been speculated to contain samples from inside the Hexagon Sun studios. These samples have also been said to match up to voices in the recordings of some live shows backing up the claim that they are from the inside.
* "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" might be a reference to the Hexagon Sun "collective" of musicians and artists who work at BoC's Hexagon Sun Studio in the east of Scotland.
*In 1998, Michael revealed that the melody in this track comes from a tape created several years prior. From Les Alchimistes:
<blockquote>
...the melody of Turquoise Hexagon Sun, for example, comes from an old tape recording made several years ago.

Comments
* The first nearly three minutes of the track may have inspired by the 1979 track Sea Cathedral by Christian Chevalier, which was included on Boards of Canada’s 2019 mixtape Societas x Tape as the outro track, prior to Inferno’s release.
Samples / Lyrics
Trivia
* The first half of the song sounds nearly identical when played forward or reversed.
* At the Inferno listening parties, this song had it’s own unique visuals, which consisted of sped-up turquoise-colored 1970s-era home videos of children. This was unlike the other tracks, which were accompanied simply by a hexagon flower spinning with fire inside. The visuals shown have not been officially released.
* Only a minor member of Boards of Canada, which is why his name was removed from the re-release of Twoism.
* Asked to have his name removed from the re-release to maintain his own identity separate from the band.<br>This seems consistent with Benbecula's policy of deflecting questions regarding his association with BoC and the complete omission of any mention of Boards of Canada on [[wikipedia:christ. * Christ. has a series of exceptionally rare early release, which are apparently in a house vein.
Should I listen what you say or listen what your folks say? It's a tough decision to make.<br />
I don't really wanna lose you but I don't want your folks to turn me over to the hands of the law.<br />
I guess they think that I'm not good enough for you. I can tell the way they act and their attitudes.<br />
As the tears roll from my eyes I feel the hurt inside. As I reach out to you saying I'm so confused.<br />
<br />
Chorus:
Oh oh I'm trapped like a fool I'm in a cage. I can't get out.<br />
You see I'm trapped, Can't you see I'm so confused? I can't get out.<br />
You see I'm trapped, like a fool I'm in a cage. I can't get out.<br />
If we love one another why should we let this go further? Can't you see it's gonna pull us apart?<br />
If you think I can't afford to support you if you want to, Ever think about ever settlin' down.<br />

Random 35 Tracks Tape refers to a collection of 35 tracks leaked on P2P networks in 2000 and 2001, with it reaching the majority of fans around September of 2004.
Unlike the "Old Tunes" tapes, the tracks are completely unlabeled; however, a few match known tracks from other sources, including commercial releases. No liner notes or tape scan have ever surfaced.

Despite its uncertain provenance, the tape is believed to be authentic.

Background
*Random 35 Tracks Tape seems to have been sourced from a cassette containing pre-Maxima tracks given to friends and family of the group. The leaking of these tracks to P2P networks (Soulseek, originally) provided much drama on WATMM.
**All files are encoded as 320kbps MP3.
* For a long time, it was assumed that this tape was the missing Old Tunes Vol. 1 (since A Few Old Tunes and Old Tunes Vol. 2 were already known), although this was never confirmed. This was finally proven false when, on 8th August 2009, Twoism forum member dealer posted new photos of a cassette and liner notes showing that A Few Old Tunes and Old Tunes Vol. 1 were, in fact, the same release.
*MDG has said that it is not known who compiled the tracks, calling it "a mystery, just a mixture".
*Zoetrope, a user on radiomute.com, referred to not only the commonly known A Few Old Tunes and Old Tunes Vol. 2, but also a third volume, which he appeared to refer to this leaked release as. Some also seem to believe that this is a 'Closes Vol. 2'.
*In 2026, two lossless rips were made available online by Samamdj.

Discovery
These tracks appear to have first surfaced on Soulseek under various names, such as "random 35 tracks tape (rarities and the best of - not old tunes v1 or v2)" and "A Few Older Tunes Disc 1/Disc 2", reflecting the uncertainty of the collection's provenance. Early sightings include:
* 9 Sep 2004 - LiveJournal post
* 3 Oct 2004 - xltronic messageboard topic
* 8 Oct 2004 - idm-l post

Availability
* On 26 May 2026, two new lossless rips appeared on YouTube, courtesy of Niski and Samamdj.
** v1 (lossless download) is faster, bit quieter, ripped using a different deck, source for a rather obscure real audio leak from the early 00s that is audibly faster
** v2 (lossless download) is the source for nearly every other leak of R35TT, but obviously lossless and without any post-processing like NR
* A rip can be downloaded at rareboc.org.
* March 15th 2022 a new restoration by oliveoil22 was posted on the Twoism forum.
Samples/Lyrics
Side A:
* "Blueberry" is believed to be the name of the short vignette at the end of "Sixtyten" on Music has the Right to Children.
* Track 6 contains a sample later used in "Seven Forty Seven", but slightly slower.
* Track 8 contains a sample from "June 9th" except much faster.

Side B:
* "It's Too Orangey" is believed to be the name of the vignette at the end of "Triangles and Rhombuses", also on Music has the Right to Children.
* Track 10 is a reversed version of "The Smallest Weird Number", later released on Geogaddi.

*An early version of this track was featured on the Boards of Canada website in 2002 (now available here) as an infinite interactive loop. The playback could be controlled via keyboard, making it possible to hear distinct parts of the track separately.
*The Shockwave Director file for the track featured on the 2002 website was named "tellia".
Warp20
*"Seven Forty Seven" was released in 2009 on Warp20 (Unheard) as the first track.
*According to the Boards of Canada official twitter, the version which appeared on Warp20 is from 2003.
*MDG: "If you listen very closely to the release version, you'll hear Freddie Mercury."

Samples / Lyrics
* Contains an eerie choir element that also appears in "A06", but here it is faster.
* Contains the "take my hand" vocal sample also used in "You Could Feel The Sky".
* Contains a piano sample from the ending of the Brian Chatton track "Smooth Touch".
* Contains a drum loop sample from Zero G - Datafile Two (Drumloop 8) sample library or samples Simon Harris - 110 BPM (Dancefloor Justice) from an album of breakbeats. These are exactly the same.
* Contains a sample of "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles, only audible when slowed down to around 20% of the original song.

Trivia
* "Seven Forty Seven" is in reference to the Boeing 747 aircraft, which was first entered into service in 1970. Many themes of BoC's music involve references to air travel and the 1970's.
* Fans have speculated the number Seven-Forty-Seven could be a devious reference to 666. If added literally, 7 plus 40 plus 7 equals 54, which is also 9 times 6. Nine sixes could be written out as 666 666 666.
* Officially, "Seven Forty Seven" can be played at both 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, revealing different elements of the song in each version played. Fans have also said that on release, some digital copies of Warp10 included the 45rpm version instead of the 33 1/3 version. This was particularly noted on iTunes.
