Hooper Bay is the name of Boards of Canada's fifth known release. Hooper Bay introduced the use of children's voices (see Jockey Slut interview), a technique which would remain a staple of the band's style through the release of Geogaddi. It has been said that the three longest tracks on the EP mark the beginning of the band's "mature phase".

Hooper Bay is also Alaskan village, a Cup'ik Eskimo settlement; the native name is Naparagamiut, but the name "hooper bay" came from a Post Office with that name established in the area.

Of the EP's five tracks, only a 35-second excerpt of Circle (posted on the EHX website in the late 1990s) has been heard by those outside of the band's friends and family. A set of MP3s labeled Hooper Bay but with significantly shorter track times than the actual EP can be found on P2P networks; however, this set is mis-labeled and is not music by Boards of Canada.
Acid Memories is the name of Boards of Canada's second known release. The Jockey Slut article by Richard Southern describes Acid Memories as:
<blockquote>
"Absurdly rare, cassette-only release from the barely teen Boards, then six-strong. Guitars meet electronics in embryonic but recognisably Boards-ian melodicism."</blockquote>

It has been said that the album is "even less imposing" than its predecessor, Catalog 3.

Of the album's six tracks, only a 24 second excerpt of "Duffy" (posted on the EHX website in the late 1990s) has been heard by those outside of the band's friends and family.

Artwork
Web images of the Acid Memories cover show the name "Boards of Canada"; the album was released as a cassette in 1989 and was never re-released. However, the band claimed that it did not "officially" use the name "Boards of Canada" until 1994, bringing the authenticity of this image (or perhaps the existence of the album itself) into question.
The Track
Amo Bishop Roden is track number 3 on the EP, In a Beautiful Place out in the Country. The title of the song comes from the name of a supposed Branch Davidian member. Roden has also been mentioned in the song "1969", the 'Poppy Seed Remix.' and the song In a Beautiful Place out in the Country, a quote from Roden, found on the EP of the same name.

The Person
Amo Paul Bishop Roden is the former wife of George Roden, a rival of David Koresh for leadership of the Branch Davidians. After the 1993 fire, she attracted notice by beginning a one-woman reoccupation of the sect's Mount Carmel property. At one point in her reoccupation, when another ex-husband, Tom Drake, rejoined her, she was also known as Amo Paul Bishop Roden Drake or Amo Roden Drake.

Amo and George Roden married in October 1987, shortly after meeting. (Since George's divorce from his wife Carmen would not be finalized until February 28, 1998, her detractors question the legitimacy of their common law arrangement.) George, son of Branch Davidian founders Benjamin and Lois Roden, claimed leadership of the sect, but faced challengers, including David Koresh (then named Vernon Howell). Just weeks later, Koresh led a band of followers onto Mt. Carmel, ending up in a shootout with George. The next year, Koresh's supporters reclaimed Mt. Carmel and expelled Amo. Her brief time with George left her pregnant with their daughter.

The standoff with the government five years later decimated Koresh's group, giving Amo the opportunity to move onto the Mt. Carmel grounds. In November 1994, she had an armed standoff with a group that included future militia figure Ron Cole. The legal case between her and surviving Koresh loyalists is still being fought in the courts, but has taken a twist following the recent takeover of the site by Charles Pace, another Branch Davidian leader.

Amo Roden also drew attention in 2001, when she drove to the Oklahoma City bombing memorial site in her pickup truck with Branch Davidian slogans, creating a brief bomb scare.

Geogaddi, Boards of Canada's second full-length missive since 1998's Music Has the Right to Children, is without a doubt the group's most controversial record. Released suddenly in 2002 with little or no promotion, the record made its official debut in six churches scattered across the world: London, New York, Tokyo, Edinburgh, Paris, and Berlin. Only one interview (conducted via e-mail with NME) was given in connection with the release (Source).

Greeted with an initial lack of enthusiasm among some listeners who found the record to be 'more of the same,' critically and among the fanbase the album was warmly recieved.

Pared down from an extraordinary 90+ tracks to a total of 23 (one of which is silence), Geogaddi has been described by Boards of Canada as "a record for some sort of trial-by-fire, a claustrophobic, twisting journey that takes you into some pretty dark experiences before you reach the open air again. It has a kind of narrative" (OOR, 2002)

Described in early interviews by Michael Sandison as "[reflecting] a chaotic period in [their] personal lives" ((OOR, 2002)), the brothers have subsequently admitted that the turmoil of the 9/11 terrorist attacks significantly influenced the tone and direction of Geogaddi. Said Michael:

"'Geogaddi' was kind of exorcising demons, and even after we'd set out to do a record like that, smack in the middle of working on it, 9/11 happened. I remember there were a few of us in the studio that day, and we just ended up glued to the TV for the whole day. I think the months after that pushed us into making a darker record, as I'm sure it did with a lot of bands." (Play Louder, 2005)

The controversial nature of Geogaddi, however, has more to do with the 'lyrical' content of the album than with its style or context. The hidden elements (back masked vocals, voices embedded deeply into the mix, etc.), while often present in their previous output, abound in unprecedented numbers on Geogaddi. The subjects addressed in these vocal samples range anywhere from the occult to the mathematical to the possibly satanic.

Themes
The following divisions will address some of the primary themes found throughout Geogaddi:

Satanism and the Occult
A common sentiment expressed in reactions to Geogaddi is summarized very well by the following Amazon.com customer's review of Geogaddi:

"A person can't listen to a BOC disc without feeling that there is something baleful in their music. These guys are weirdos (from the interviews they've done), which doesn't take anything away from what they may be trying to accomplish (make good music). I believe they are trying to do something more than just make good music. They are working for the side that I'm not on, so it would be deleterious to my soul to listen to the influential grooves they lay down. The evil is blatant" (Amazon, 2003).

Many have expressed similar feelings. So just how much satanic content really is there on Geogaddi (if at all)?

Answer: It's hard to say. Many of the so-called vocal 'easter eggs' found on Geogaddi are usually at best based on guesses or approximations of what is probably really being said. Boards of Canada have become increasingly dismissive in recent interviews of the theories and speculation built around the record:

"...all the mystery and magic and all this kind of nonsense that built up around the last record [Geogaddi] got to a point where it was just silly. People were understanding things from our music that we didn't put in there and were saying there was an evil undercurrent to everything. And we are not like that at all. It was a theme that we wanted to pursue on that record but people have understood from that that we always put secret, dark, sinister, and satanic things in our music. And that became more important than the music itself" (Pitchfork Media, 2005).

Yet despite their surprise with the public's reaction to their records (particularly Geogaddi and In a Beautiful Place out in the Country), Boards of Canada have done little to allay the fears of those troubled by the content. The references to the Branch Davidians are difficult to dismiss, and many subsequent decisions on the brother's part (such as the original Trans Canada Highway release date as well as the TCH trailer micro-site) have only further cemented their quasi-satanic image rather than eased debate.

As Marcus explained to URB Magazine: "[w]e're interested in all kinds of subjects, and I suppose we went through a patch of looking at cults and the mass mind control of religion and so on. We read a lot and pay attention to cultural events, but we view everything from a distance. We're up here in our observation point, gathering up data about all the weird shit that's happening in the world and spewing it out in some way in our music and visuals. The Davidians thing was about the shock of seeing the way the U.S. authorities handled it all" (Urb Magazine, 2002).

Despite this avowed interest in the occult, Boards of Canada has repeatedly maintained in interviews that "[w]e're not Satanists, or Christians, or pagans. We're not religious at all. We just put symbols into our music sometimes, depending on what we're interested in at the time. We do care about people and the state of the world, and if we're spiritual at all it's purely in the sense of caring about art and inspiring people with ideas" (OOR, 2002).

Even given these pronouncements from the brothers, the controversy surrounding the occult references in Geogaddi continues to burn. Perhaps it is this very mythos that gives Geogaddi its enigmatic and enduring appeal.

For specific discussions of back masked lyrics and other easter eggs, please see the individual track articles, especially the articles for "You Could Feel the Sky," "Alpha And Omega," "Dawn Chorus," and "1969."

It is also worthy of note that the standard version of Geogaddi clocks in at 66:06. Boards of Canada explained this fact in a 2005 Interview with Earplug Magazine:

"When we were discussing the length of the silence [Warp Records owner] Steve Beckett actually suggested to take it to a total 66 minutes 6 seconds, because then everyone would think it's the devil who made the album. And we just laughed."

Mathematics
*A Is To B As B Is To C is an example of a golden ratio.
*The main riff in The Devil Is In The Details is supposed to relate to a well known mathematical equation.

Numerology
The album contains 23 tracks which may relate to the "23 Enigma", a belief that all events are connected to the number 23. The belief is held by many who practice Discordianism, a parody religion centred around the "mindfuck" principle and the book "The Illuminatus! Trilogy".

Title
The meaning and significance of the title Geogaddi are unknown. When asked about the meaning of the word "Geogaddi," Boards of Canada explained that "[i]t can have several meanings. We have our own definite idea of it, a combination of words that describe an idea we had at the time of writing it, but we want listeners to make their own minds up" (HMV Magazine, 2002).

The prefix geo-, taken from the Greek word for "ground" or "earth" (ge), is common to many words dealing with the Earth, such as geology.

Gaddi is the name of a nomadic Hindu tribe from Himachal Pradesh, in northwestern India. They are widely respected for their honesty, friendliness, and peaceful lifestyle. Crime is almost unknown in Gaddi villages. (NPR News article about the Gaddis)

Gaddi was also the surname of two father-and-son Italian painters of the early Renaissance, Taddeo Gaddi (c.1300-1366), and Agnolo Gaddi (c. 1350-1396). The work of both artists is largely concerned with angels, saints, and the Madonna.

Gad is a Biblical name, belonging to one of the Tribes of Israel, a son of Jacob, and a prophet of David. The prophet Gad is most notable for delivering to David the choice of three punishments from God in 2 Samuel: three years of famine, three months of fleeing from enemies, or three days of plague in your land. David allows God to choose, and 70,000 of his people die in three days from plague. (2 Samuel 24:11-15) The other Gad was the seventh son of Jacob and the founder of the Israelite tribe also named Gad; interestingly, like the modern Gaddi tribe of India (see above), the tribe of Gad were also nomads.

Gad was also the name of an ancient pagan god worshipped during the Babylonian exile in the sixth century BCE. Gad is described as the god of fortune, and the word gad itself refers to luck in Hebrew; its root is in the ancient Hebrew term for to divide or to share (as in fate being "meted out").

Considering these elements, the etymology of Geogaddi appears to suggest a connection between religion and the Earth &mdash; tying in somewhat with the pan-religious themes presented in "From One Source All Things Depend".

*The main riff in The Devil Is In The Details is supposed to related to a well known mathematical equation.

Describing the influence of nature on their art, Mike and Marcus told the following story about the production of "Rue the Whirl":

"There's this track on the album called "Rue The Whirl", where you can hear birds singing. What happened was that I was listening to the track, and, oddly, I could hear birds singing. Then I realized that the window was open in the studio, and since the birdsong went so well with the music, we recorded it to capture the feel of what we experienced listening with the window open" (Virgin Megaweb Magazine, 1998).

Mathematics
Numerology
The album contains 23 tracks which may relate to the "23 Enigma", a belief that all events are connected to the number 23. The belief is held by many who practice Discordianism, a parody religion centred around the "mindfuck" principle and the book "The Illuminatus! Trilogy".

Geogaddi Trivia
1. When asked about the meaning of the word "Geogaddi," Boards of Canada explained that "[i]t can have several meanings. We have our own definite idea of it, a combination of words that describe an idea we had at the time of writing it, but we want listeners to make their own minds up" (HMV Magazine, 2002)
Trans Canada Highway is an EP by Boards of Canada. As described by Boards of Canada and Warp Records Warp Records, the EP "visits a darker place, a glacial place, away from the warmth and light of The Campfire Headphase." Those who ordered the EP directly from Warp also received a sticker and a free copy of the Dayvan Cowboy music video.
Originally scheduled for release on 06/06/06 (perhaps to further their occult mythos), the release date was bumped up to 29 May 2006 (a day later in the US), due to what was described on the Warp website as "unanticipated satanic activity." The nature of this activity, whether it was directly related to Boards of Canada or not, has never been explained.

The EP garnered relatively lukewarm reception by critics and by many in the idm community, the latter of whom were suspicious about the commercial ambitions suggested by the re-release of Dayvan Cowboy as a single. Nevertheless, tracks such as "Left Side Drive" remain classics with the general Boards of Canada fanbase.

The ep was released on both CD and 12" formats. The latter was pressed on white vinyl.

In addition to the standard release, there is also a white label promo/test pressing on black vinyl which is identical in content to the official Trans Canada release. The CD version of the promo/test, however, is limited exclusively to the tracks "Dayvan Cowboy" and "Skyliner." The Japanese version of the ep (in cd format) on Beat Records additionally includes a 'Bonus Video' called "Invocation." This short .mpg file was also available in Flash fomat on the Trans Canada Highway microsite - see below.

Mathematics

The Devil Is In The Details is track number 16 on the Geogaddi album. In an interview with the NME it is suggested that the main riff of the song was designed to imitate a specific well known equation.

Lyrics
Lyrics for The Devil Is In The Details are sampled and heavily distorted, almost to the point where the words sound like their being spoken underwater. The exact source and precice words are debatable. The following interpretation has been taken from songmeanings.net;

Just relax and enjoy this pleasant adventure.
Here you are, secure and protected, in this...your special place.
Letting my voice flow into your mind. you don't need to concentrate, just gently as you go.
Suggestions are going into your unconscious mind.
Open yourself up to the greater wisdom and understanding.
So now you're letting the sound of my voice reach the inner, healthy, receptive center of yourself.
See yourself now, in your imagination. you are being transformed in a positive, healthy way.
Slowly you are programming your unconscious mind,
Gaining new insight to your directions in the future.
Allow yourself to be more aware of your pathway through this life.
Enjoy new opportunities.

As the days go by, you will feel it in your mind.
You are allowing this to happen. these things are happening day-by-day,
Just as i am telling you they're happening, wherever you are.
See this happening, and trying to become a part of you.
More and more rapidly, more and more surely, more and more powerfully each day.
When it is necessary, you can program yourself, and be able to dream the information you require. This awareness will come gradually at your own rate.
It will never be more than you can cope with.
This guidance will help show you the way.
This will only happen, if you choose, it will be so.
Ready, now...
*Roygbiv is an acronym for the colours of the rainbow, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
*The vocal sample is of a child saying "Yeah" reversed.
*Roygbiv - Alphaquest Mix was a remix done by BOC specially for someone called Andy Soosay's student film. The track was leaked onto the net and is understood to be genuine. It's longer than the original at 6:23. It's backed up by images of the actual DAT inlay which contains nuggets such as "Custom DIY job for Andy Soosay", "Date Time: Thursady 15th May 1997", "SOURCE: Brown source or tomato source" and "COMMENTS: Yeah, it's pretty good".
