There has been much debate on what equipment Boards of Canada uses to get their unique sound. Due to their reclusive nature and lack of touring, not much is known for certain, but there is much speculation.

Secret weapon
BoC themselves have, in multiple interviews, mentioned the use of a "secret weapon" they use to generate their unique sound. As the name implied, they have declined to provide any specific information on what this "weapon" might be, but most expect it to be some sort of old analog synth.

Many believe the Yamaha CS80 to be this weapon. In the WATMM thread "ATTN BOC-sessives, CS-80 on eBay, however, jbible refutes this, saying

<blockquote>"The synth used by BOC often mistaken for a CS80 is a Crumar with a BOC emblem covering the name of the synth on the back."</blockquote>.

Since jbible has seen BoC live (and is the source of the Live @ ATP bootleg), his comments hold some weight.

Here is a detailed "write-up" of the CS-80, courtesy of the SynthMuseum.

Synthesizers
SH-101
It appears that BOC use the SH-101 extensively. It possible that it is their only mono-synth.

It's hard to prove this definitively and the tone of the sounds are nearly always altered in the mix making a perfect copy of any particular sound extremely difficult.

However, having used this synth extensively in my opinion there's almost no mono-synth sound on BOC's records that couldn't have come from the 101.

In this link I show how to make the Roygbiv bassline on a 101 (actulaly a 202 but the sound generation circuitry is identical).

CS1x
A blue Yamaha CS-1X is visible in a 1999 Lighthouse Party photograph. It is more likely to have been used to trigger samples than generating its own sound, though this could ostensibly have been used for such sounds as Olson's filtered piano.

Native Instruments
In a 2001(?) interview with Mate Galic of Native Instruments, Boards of Canada is listed as one of the artists using NI products (but not details on which ones).

Tape decks
Grundig
Unknown tape deck
“We love these low-quality tape machines,” Eoin says. “The great thing with machines such as the <b>Grundig</b> is that it's tragically bad. Whatever you record into it just doesn't come out unscathed. There's a ‘magic eye’ valve display on it, and when you hit the tape deck with the right volume, enough to fill out the magic eye, it's at that exact sweet spot that it is saturating the tape. So if you then sample back the playback, it's got a thousand years' grain on it.” Remix, 2005
Tascam
Unknown 4-track
We drop a lot of our music down onto a <b>Tascam 4-track</b> that has a great saturating effect on the sound.
Remix, 2002

MSR-16
Whether they're working separately or together, getting ideas down is generally a result of recording extended jams to tape on anything from a <b>Tascam MSR-16 reel-to-reel</b> to an old Revox recorder to a Grundig machine to an ordinary cassette. == Samplers ==
Akai
S1000
We have five or six samplers, but my favorite by far is still the <b>Akai S1000</b>. It's an old tank now, and the screen has faded so that I almost can't read it, but I know it inside out. It's the most spontaneous thing for making up little tunes. It adds something to the sound — maybe the lower bit depth has something to do with that. - Remix, 2002

Early vs. Late Releases
Boards of Canada's discography essentially falls in two camps.
*The well-known releases that followed after the duo were signed, first to SKAM and then to Warp Records, which can be purchased in any decent record shop.
*The releases which precede this, of which original copies are exceptionally rare. Much of the knowledge we have of the latter is due to The Cosmic Crofter's webpage, which is now defunct.
**The exceptions: copies of Maxima and the "Old Tunes" tapes which are almost certainly legitimate are readily available on the p2p networks.
**Many albums which purport to be other rare releases are commonplace too, but almost without exception, these have proven to be fakes of varying qualities so far.

Trans Canada Highway is an EP by Boards of Canada. As described by Warp Records, the EP "visits a darker place, “a glacial place” as Boards of Canada put it, away from the warmth and light of The Campfire Headphase." Those who ordered the EP directly from Warp also received a sticker and a free copy of the Dayvan Cowboy music video.

Originally scheduled for release on 06/06/06 (perhaps to further their occult mythos), the release date was bumped up to 29 May 2006 (a day later in the US), due to what was described on the Warp website as "unanticipated satanic activity." The nature of this activity, whether it was directly related to Boards of Canada or not, has never been explained.

The EP garnered relatively lukewarm reception by critics and by many in the idm community, the latter of whom were suspicious about the commercial ambitions suggested by the re-release of Dayvan Cowboy as a single. Nevertheless, tracks such as "Left Side Drive" remain classics with the general Boards of Canada fanbase.

The ep was released on both CD and 12" formats. The latter was pressed on white vinyl although there is also a white label promo/testpressing on black vinyl which is identical. The promo CD only has the tracks Dayvan Cowboy and Skyliner. The Japanese version of the CD EP, on Beat Records, also contains the 'Bonus Video' Invocation. This short .mpg file was also available in Flash fomat on the Trans Canada Highway microsite - see below.

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/2725/geogaddicl5.jpg

Geogaddi, Boards of Canada's second full-length missive since 1998's Music Has the Right to Children, is without a doubt the group's most controversial record. Released suddenly in 2002 with little or no promotion, the record made its official debut in six churches scattered across the world: London, New York, Tokyo, Edinburgh, Paris, and Berlin. Only one interview (conducted via e-mail with NME) was given in connection with the release (Source).

Greeted with an initial lack of enthusiasm among some listeners who found the record to be 'more of the same,' critically and the among the fanbase the album was warmly recieved. The intricacy and detail of its production makes the album a rich experience, yielding new detail with each subsequent listen.

Pared down from an extraordinary 90+ tracks to a total of 23 (one of which is silence), Geogaddi has been described by Boards of Canada as "a record for some sort of trial-by-fire, a claustrophobic, twisting journey that takes you into some pretty dark experiences before you reach the open air again. It has a kind of narrative" (OOR, 2002)

Described in early interviews by Michael Sandison as "[reflecting] a chaotic period in [their] personal lives" ((OOR, 2002)), the brothers have subsequently admitted that the turmoil of the 9/11 terrorist attacks significantly influenced the tone and direction of Geogaddi. Said Michael:

"'Geogaddi' was kind of exorcising demons, and even after we'd set out to do a record like that, smack in the middle of working on it, 9/11 happened. I remember there were a few of us in the studio that day, and we just ended up glued to the TV for the whole day. I think the months after that pushed us into making a darker record, as I'm sure it did with a lot of bands." (Play Louder, 2005)

The controversial nature of Geogaddi, however, has more to do with the 'lyrical' content of the album than with its style or context. The hidden elements (back masked vocals, voices embedded deeply into the mix, etc.), while often present in their previous output, abound in unprecedented numbers on Geogaddi. The subjects addressed in these vocal samples range anywhere from the occult to the mathematical to the possibly satanic.

The following divisions will address some of the primary themes found throughout Geogaddi:

Satanism and the Occult
A common sentiment expressed in reactions to Geogaddi is summarized very well by the following Amazon.com customer's review of Geogaddi:

"A person can't listen to a BOC disc without feeling that there is something baleful in their music. These guys are weirdos (from the interviews they've done), which doesn't take anything away from what they may be trying to accomplish (make good music). I believe they are trying to do something more than just make good music. They are working for the side that I'm not on, so it would be deleterious to my soul to listen to the influential grooves they lay down. The evil is blatant" (Amazon, 2003).

Many have expressed similar feelings. So just how much satanic content really is there on Geogaddi (if at all)?

Answer: It's hard to say. Many of the so-called vocal 'easter eggs' found on Geogaddi are usually at best based on guesses or approximations of what is probably really being said. Boards of Canada have become increasingly dismissive in recent interviews of the theories and speculation built around the record:

"...all the mystery and magic and all this kind of nonsense that built up around the last record got to a point where it was just silly. People were understanding things from our music that we didn't put in there and were saying there was an evil undercurrent to everything. And we are not like that at all. It was a theme that we wanted to pursue on that record but people have understood from that that we always put secret, dark, sinister, and satanic things in our music. And that became more important than the music itself" (Pitchfork Media, 2005).

Yet despite their surprise with the public's reaction to their records (particularly Geogaddi and In a Beautiful Place out in the Country), Boards of Canada have done little to allay the fears of those troubled by the content. The references to the Branch Davidians are difficult to minterpret or dismiss, and many subsequent decisions on the brother's part (such as the original Trans Canada Highway release date as well as the TCH trailer micro-site) have only further cemented their quasi-satanic image rather than eased debate.

As Marcus explained to URB Magazine: "[w]e're interested in all kinds of subjects, and I suppose we went through a patch of looking at cults and the mass mind control of religion and so on. We read a lot and pay attention to cultural events, but we view everything from a distance. We're up here in our observation point, gathering up data about all the weird shit that's happening in the world and spewing it out in some way in our music and visuals. The Davidians thing was about the shock of seeing the way the U.S. authorities handled it all" (Urb Magazine, 2002).

Despite this avowed interest in the occult, Boards of Canada has repeatedly maintained in interviews that "[w]e're not Satanists, or Christians, or pagans. We're not religious at all. We just put symbols into our music sometimes, depending on what we're interested in at the time. We do care about people and the state of the world, and if we're spiritual at all it's purely in the sense of caring about art and inspiring people with ideas" (OOR, 2002).

Even given these pronouncements from the brothers, the controversy surrounding the occult references in Geogaddi continues to burn. Perhaps it is this very mythos that gives Geogaddi its enigmatic and enduring appeal.

For specific discussions of back masked lyrics and other easter eggs, please see the individual track articles, especially the articles for "You Could Feel the Sky," "Alpha and Omega," "Dawn Chorus," and "1969."

It is also worthy of note that the standard version of Geogaddi clocks in at 66:06. Boards of Canada explained this fact in a 2005 Interview with Earplug Magazine:

"When we were discussing the length of the silence [Warp Records owner] Steve Beckett actually suggested to take it to a total 66 minutes 6 seconds, because then everyone would think it's the devil who made the album. And we just laughed."
Geogaddi Trivia
1. When asked about the meaning of the word "Geogaddi," Boards of Canada explained that "[i]t can have several meanings. We have our own definite idea of it, a combination of words that describe an idea we had at the time of writing it, but we want listeners to make their own minds up" (HMV Magazine, 2002)

Geogaddi was the second full-length album created by Boards of Canada. In the beginning, Geogaddi wasn't as well recieved as Music Has the Right to Children because of the fact that it seemed more "stale" or under-produced than Music Has the Right to Children was. But this since has changed with Geogaddi being the favorite album of many listeners. Geogaddi also has the reputation of being one of the most mysterious and riddle-laden albums in Boards of Canada's discography. With numerous hidden messages about the Devil, subtle references towards gods, mathematically timed and named songs and a track of nothing but pure silence, there is something for everyone in this album. It was released February 18, 2002.r
Trans Canada Highway is an EP by Boards of Canada. As described by Warp Records, the EP "visits a darker place, “a glacial place” as Boards of Canada put it, away from the warmth and light of The Campfire Headphase." Those who ordered the EP directly from Warp also received a sticker and a free copy of the "Dayvan Cowboy" music video.

The latter was pressed on white vinyl.
