Still from the Dayvan Cowboy video.

Comments
* Dayvan Cowboy is considered by many to be Boards of Canada's first mainstream single.
* This song was remixed by Odd Nosdam on the Trans Canada Highway EP. It was the first remix of Boards of Canada to appear on any of their releases.

Cultural References
* A Day Van is a discontinued make of Chevolet Astro van.

Video
* A video for "Dayvan Cowboy" was released as a promo DVD, included with Warpmart pre-orders of the Trans Canada Highway EP. For more information, see Videos.
* The first half of the video shows footage of Captain Joseph Kittinger's skydiving from the Excelsior III, a gondola raised by balloons to 102,800 feet as part of Project Excelsior (a series of record-breaking dives from high-altitude). Captain Kittinger fell for 14 minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 614 mph before opening his parachute at 18,000 feet.

"Blockbusters" is a short interlude of samples from the popular British television game show of the same name, edited together for humorous effect.

The game show is also notable for its game board composed of hexagons.

Slow This Bird Down

2008-01-21T09:23:16Z

Down10: added some trivia on the title

Near the end of this song is an aural collage of shortwave radio noise. Morse, teletype, and various data signals can be heard including a radio modem (called the Harris RF-5710) used by hobbyists and naval military services.

"Slow this bird down" is pilot jargon for reducing speed during a landing.

Discography

Down10: /* Remixes */ added Why? remix, official BoC remixes, and some notes

Early vs. Late Releases
Boards of Canada's discography essentially falls in two camps.
*The well-known releases that followed after the duo were signed, first to SKAM and then to Warp Records, which can be purchased in any decent record shop.
*The releases which precede this, of which original copies are exceptionally rare. Much of the knowledge we have of the latter is due to The Cosmic Crofter's webpage, which is now defunct.
**The exceptions: copies of Maxima and the "Old Tunes" tapes which are almost certainly legitimate are readily available on the p2p networks.
**Many albums which purport to be other rare releases are commonplace too, but almost without exception, these have proven to be fakes of varying qualities so far.

Random 35 Tracks Tape

Background
*Old Tunes Vol. 1 seems to be sourced from a cassette tape containing a (presumably) hand-selected set of pre-Maxima tracks. The leaking of these tracks to P2P networks (Soulseek, originally) provided much drama on WATMM.

All files are encoded as 320kbps MP3.

An Eagle In Your Mind Video Contest

2006-09-14T06:30:18Z

Down10: Fixed italics and wikified some key words

The An Eagle In Your Mind Video Contest was a Boards of Canada fan video contest held by WATMM in late 2002. The videos were judged by the band themselves, who also supplied the prizes.

Announcement
The contest was announced on on August 8, 2002 on WATMM.

:Ever wish there were BoC videos? Can you imagine what a video for ROYGBIV would have, or Orange Romeda? Now's your chance, as we are having our first ever "Eagle In Your Mind" Video Contest!
:Hexagon Sun and BoC are kindly offering a autographed Limited Edition Geogaddi CD as the Grand Prize to the person who can make the most creative video set to their favourite BoC song!

Rules
Entries were submitted by FTP or mail. The deadline for entries was December 20th.

Results
The contest results were posted on June 10th on WATMM. The results were delayed as BoC were apparently away from Hexagon Sun for some time.

Instead of picking a single winner, the band awarded prizes to three videos. In addition to the expected prize of a signed copy of Geogaddi for each winner, the first place entry received a "very rare" signed metallic Music Has the Right to Children poster.

:We were impressed with the amount of work everyone put into this competition and ended up picking three favourites rather than one. there were quite a few great films submitted, some using using lovely super8 filmclips and some very nice fuzzy video. i know it's a cliche to say it was difficult to choose a winner, but it was. so in the end we figured the john-carpenter-tachyon-video-esque "corsair" clip by magnus hedberg was nicely done, especially with the additional sounds. next up was the norman mclaren-ish abstract clip that (anon?) made for "june 9th", which upon close inspection reveals nice little synchronisations to the different melody parts in our track. and finally the overall winner is the brilliant day-glo "gyroscope" clip by billy clayton, which has just the right lysergic qabala sesame street feel to it. great stuff. an honourable mention to the dreamy stills by david cameron who does a fine job unweaving our little tapestries on his site. well done to everyone who entered the competition and thanks for putting so much work in. and thanks for listening so closely...
:keep up the Wo God Rok.... mike sandison

The prizes arrived at Joyrex's on June 27th (including stickers for all entries) and were distributed to the winners.

Winners
# "Gyroscope" by Billy Clayton
# "June 9th" by Anonymous
# "Corsair" by Magnus Hedberg
