OK The reason it was jumped on was this: Warp and BOC have been in talks for a long while about putting out a box set of old tracks from these tapes and others, with new packaging and art, to be released sometime after the forthcoming record. The tapes were private comps given out to close friends a few years ago, long before the band imagined there would be this kind of interest, and long before the likes of Soulseek etc existed.

The tracks are out there now, nothing can be done about that, they've been circulating for a while and fans have them, so the decision was taken to at least consider tidying them up and repackaging them with decent exclusive artwork & more rarities. BOC never wanted these tracks presented this way, mislabelled and as poor-quality MP3 files.

There's no 'hype', these comps were never listed on any old discogs as they were never intended for mass release in the first place.

Now the intention is still to get round to scheduling a release of these tunes and other rare comps, but unscrupulous people like 'prince murat' are obviously stealing the thunder of the proposed releases, whilst trying to make a tidy profit in the process (a starting price of $799 speaks volumes about 'prince murat's true intentions. who is trying to profit from hype here? if any money is going to be involved, surely the artist who wrote those tracks should be receiving the royalties, and not this person? there's no difference between this kind of profiteering and someone trying to sell a bootleg CDR of Beck's new album months prior to release.)

Anyway, now you know, we hope the intervention hasn't caused too much negative feeling, after all the concern that Warp and BOC have is that basically it's going to spoil the impact of a nice release that hopefully will be enjoyed by the fans.

BOC didn't produce ringtones for MTV's website. That would be ridiculous. When a band has a recording/publishing deal there are a lot of things done with their music that the band has no knowledge of, such as synchronisation on gardening programmes etc.
QUOTE(lumpenGriff @ May 16 2006, 11:09 PM)

I think that's a bit too cynical a take on things, and not the whole story. I think there's a strong libertarian streak running through all of BoC's work. But, unlike 60s hippies who naively felt that bucking authority and running free into the woods would lead to peace and love, BoC - with the hindsight of people who saw what the 70's wrought - realize that dark and dangerous things lurk in the woods. But you should go in anyway. I think BoC see themselves as guardians/proponents of the mysterious, which means everything shadowy and inchoate - the "pagan" world. A place where beauty and madness aren't that far from each other, and blissful communal living and brainwashed cultism are only a hair apart. I think at the time they made IABPOITC and Geogaddi they (or perhaps just Mike) were in a very dark spot, where they felt that a person like David Koresh, however delusional, was in fact an example of a truly "free thinker," and therefore worthy of some respect or re-evaluation. It's a radical and perhaps foolish stance, to say "however crazy he may have been, at least Koresh wasn't a conformist." In other words: madness may be preferable to conformity. But in todays world of government intruding ever more into our daily lives, this view makes as much sense as ever.

Basically I think their stance was anti-politically-correct. PCism says that it values multiple viewpoints, when in fact it is very narrow-minded. I think BoC were saying in their own way, that truly free thinking incorporates madness and mystery, where everything isn't spelled out in excruciatingly literal academic terms. I think they want to shake you up by confronting you with "cultlike" music. Whether they believe it or not is sort of beside the point; they are interested in your reaction. Most people probably don't get it or are afraid of it, instead of recognizing and appreciating the pull in the core of their being towards cultlike behavior (BoC worship being one example). BoC are not "safe." They are not just there to repackage nostalgic, sepia-toned images of your childhood. Or rather, they are there to preserve all of your childhood, including the parts you might rather forget: listening to adults argue; being betrayed by your first friend, blind puppy-love, humiliation. They want you to be both seduced and frightened by their music, and to recognize the fact that you are being seduced, and be frightened by your own reaction. They are masterful psychological manipulators; they make Aphex Twin's in-your-face antics seem childish by comparison.

IMO.

finally a good understanding of what BOC do.

BOC didn't sample Basinski for that track at all. Also, 'Roygbiv' was written from scratch, as is nearly everything else BOC have released. The only samples used in Boards' tracks are typically speech/vocal samples. It's arguable that without this move, Boards of Canada would not exist; the sense of displacement and nostalgia in the music that seems to be mentioned in every review, and obviously the band's namesake, the National Film Board of Canada all seem to hark back to a period in the late seventies and early eighties when there was psychedelic videos on Sesame Street, and cold war looming.

At present, the duo live in Scotland again, working out of the Hexagon Sun Studio.

Family relation
Before their interview with Pitchfork Media, Michael and Marcus were seen as just two friends with a mutual appreciation for music and the art of music creation. They had often talked about their youth together, creating ramshackle musical projects with buddies and by themselves and how they met at a young age. However, during an interview (see above) with Pitchfork Media, they revealed that they both are infact brothers. The reason behind hiding this fact was that they did not want to be see as just another brotherly-owned electronic band. An example of this was Orbital, another influential electronic band powered by Paul and Phil Hartnoll. This is why all of their early and current work is labelled as produced by "Michael Sandison & Marcus Eoin" instead of "Michael & Marcus Sandison". It is unknown whether or not Marcus will stop using his middle name as his lastname even when the secrets out.

Recording history, commercially known work
Boards of Canada's commercially known and full-length discography begins with their smash-hit album Music Has the Right to Children. Being dubbed one of the greatest creations in electronic music history, Music Has the Right to Children introduced many to Boards of Canada and left awful big shoes for the duo to fill for their next album. During the time between Music Has the Right to Children and In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country, there was an EP named Peel Session. It was a recording of the broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on July 21, 1998 and was released on It was released on January 11, 1999. Two years after their first full-length album was released, they shipped out In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country. In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country was a four track EP that first made mention of the mysterious Branch Davidian group that Boards of Canada are so fond of remarking upon in their songs and albums. Two of its songs have to do with the group. The duos next release, on February 18, 2002, was the fascinating Geogaddi. Geogaddi's stellar kaleidoscopic art work laviously coats the album cover on all of the versions but its truely magnificent on the triple vinyl set. Within the gatefold package is three sleeves with an array of hexagonally-styled artwork with different images each side. Many would agree that this is what twelve inches of free space is really for.

Interestingly Geogaddi was not a fan favorite from the beginning. With many still hung onto Music Has the Right to Children, reviews looked down on Michael and Marcus' sophomore album as "under-produced" or not as good as their last album. Despite this, the album has mystified listeners with its large amounts of hidden details, subtle hints towards cosmic entities and kaleidoscopic imagery, Geogaddi is now held as one of the duos best albums to date, auditorially and visually. Jump a couple years into the future to 2005 where Boards of Canada finally released their first album in three years. The Campfire Headphase made two milestones: it incorporated guitars and lacked the trademark laughter. Instead of kids playing and laughing and educational tunes chiming there was the sound of an untuned, poorly-kempt guitar to create a totally new sound for Boards of Canada. Some welcomed this change, while others disagreed with it, citing the difference between this and their early, "better" work.

Pre-commercially known work
Besides their successful full-length albums, Boards of Canada also have an extensive list of early work. The assorted creations date back to the 1980s and most information regarding them is widely available. This includes album artwork and titles, song lengths and times and so on. Although at present most of this work has never been released to the general public and may never be heard by people other than the brothers friends and family. However, there has been rumors that they actually may release a boxset with their earlier work in it but this is all purely skeptical.

Possibly the most well known early album was Twoism. An album with a strong fan following, Twoism was the reason the duo received their record deal. Sean Booth, from Autechre, brought Twoism to the attention of Skam Records president Andy Maddocks and it took off from there.

Lyrics, garbled speech and sounds
Boards of Canada utilize many tricks and sounds during the creation of their albums. Most of the assorted sounds used went on later to become trademarks of the band and give them reason for their "nostalgic" label. They also use many lyrics in their albums ranging from one-liners to full paragraphs. Most of their speech bits are words that are simple or things you would hear in movies literally. But most of the other lyrics are equally as garbled, cut-up, destroyed, mixed or reversed.

One of the more prominant methods in the production of their albums is making them sound as if they came right off an old educational program from the 1970s. Being born during the early '70s and growing up on its shows, Michael and Marcus delight in bringing back old memories with imitating the faint, childish and artificial sounds of the time.

List of samples used by Boards of Canada

Live sets
As a band, Michael and Marcus have only played a handful of live shows. But what makes these shows so special is that besides playing original, well-loved songs, they often also play never before heard, unnamed songs. Some of their most fascinating and finest songs are played during these live shows.

The show with the largest amount of unreleased work is their 2001 performace during All Tomorrow's Parties. Encompassing five unknown songs and seven known, this collection displays what Boards of Canada really has in their unreleased music rack.
Notes
Track 1
This track is relatively slow-paced when compared to the rest of the brothers discography. It feautures deep, warm and lovely sounding synths that are played very slowly and segue into each other excellently.

Availability
Recordings from this concert was never released. However, an audience bootleg from the show is widely available on mp3. Unfortunately, the quality is low, with heavy distortion in the lower frequencies.

jbible
On December 6, 2004, in the WATMM thread "Aphex Twin @ ATP", jbible mentioned that he was the one who had recorded BoC's performance. He provided some additional information about the recording:

* Regarding the security:
** "Wasnt easy. I sewed the recorder into my jacket and microphone down the inside of my sleeve."
** "They were being real crazy about recordings and cameras....they had security taking discs and film. Pointing flashlights at people taking pictures."

* Regarding the quality:
**"Yeah I know the quality gets bad...I think it may have been a mix of being to close to the speaker and they seemed to get louder as the show went on. I had just purchased my MD right before my trip to Europe so it may have been a lack of experience with it as well. I got the AE set as well as some clips from some of the other performances. I think I still have the master MD's somewhere. Might be able to retransfer it and remaster eventually."

* Regarding the show itself:
**"At the time BOC was the highlight for me...since I had never seen them before...nor since. It was right after IABPOITC came out. My first time to EU. Day after I recorded the set I took a walk through the actual BPOITC that surrounded the festival venue and listened to the set. It was quite surreal."
Limited to fifty copies, pressed on both mc (?) and cd formats, the tracks on BoC Maxima range from previously released material to songs which to this day have yet to see wide re-release. Many of the tracks featured on this disc would later be chosen for the track listing of Music Has the Right to Children, though with some differences (notably on "One Very Important Thought.")

This release was broadcasted in full on France's Helter Skelter radio show in 2002.

Hexagon_Sun_Official posted the following on WATMM on February 15, 2005, in response to the (subsequently cancelled) auction of original Old Tunes tapes on ebay by Prince Murat;
OK The reason it was jumped on was this: Warp and BOC have been in talks for a long while about
putting out a box set of old tracks from these tapes and others, with new packaging and art, to
be released sometime after the forthcoming record. The tapes were private comps given out to close
friends a few years ago, long before the band imagined there would be this kind of interest,
and long before the likes of Soulseek etc existed.
The tracks are out there now, nothing can be done about that, they've been circulating for a while
and fans have them, so the decision was taken to at least consider tidying them up and repackaging
them with decent exclusive artwork & more rarities. BOC never wanted these tracks presented this
way, mislabelled and as poor-quality MP3 files.
There's no 'hype', these comps were never listed on any old discogs as they were never intended
for mass release in the first place.
Now the intention is still to get round to scheduling a release of these tunes and other rare
comps, but unscrupulous people like 'prince murat' are obviously stealing the thunder of the
proposed releases, whilst trying to make a tidy profit in the process (a starting price of $799
speaks volumes about 'prince murat's true intentions. who is trying to profit from hype here?
if any money is going to be involved, surely the artist who wrote those tracks should be receiving
the royalties, and not this person? there's no difference between this kind of profiteering
and someone trying to sell a bootleg CDR of Beck's new album months prior to release.)
Anyway, now you know, we hope the intervention hasn't caused too much negative feeling,
after all the concern that Warp and BOC have is that basically it's going to spoil the
impact of a nice release that hopefully will be enjoyed by the fans.

-mark, hs
Bearing in mind that live appearances by Boards of Canada are sparse, there are a number of concerts which (to date) no bootleg recordings seem to exist for.

Unrecorded live sets
*Boards of Canada appeared with Autechre, Panasonic and Cylob on 19 July 1996 ("Autechre Live At The Reach"),at The Reach (King's College Student Union) in Aldwych, London.
*BoC and ThinkTank supported Autechre in Edinburgh on (it is thought) 20 Feb 1997, at The Venue, Edinburgh.
*BoC were the headline act at one of Skam's "Versivo" nights at the Roadhouse in Manchester in February of 1997. No precise date known for that one.
*BoC also performed at the Phoenix Festival held from 17-20 July 1997 at Long Marston, Stratford-upon-Avon.
*BoC supported Seefeel in a live show in London, at Blech (a club run by Warp), on 31 Oct 1997.
*BoC also appeared at the Sunflower Festival, Munich, with Autechre, Jega, and Mike Paradinas on the 26 July 1997
* RedMoon (maybe)
* Add to me!
Promotional events
*For the launch of Geogaddi, listening parties were held in churches in London, New York, Tokyo, Edinburgh, Paris, and Berlin. Copies of the Geogaddi promo were seemingly distributed at the parties.
*A listening party was also held for the launch of The Campfire Headphase on August 10, 2005, at the 'Angel Orensatz Foundation' building in New York - the same location used for the Geogaddi NY listening party.
