Amazon
The idolized and enigmatic duo are back. After considerable speculation by their rabid fan base (not to mention the media following every step of the way), Boards of Canada have revealed that their new album Tomorrow's Harvest will be released on June 11 via their long time home, Warp Records. Musically, the album is somehow dark yet positive, with atmospheric dissonance and mind-bending melodic creations.

Quotes
Mike Sandison
Mike Sandison

"The challenge with this record was crafting the tunes into a specific style and time period we want to reference. In fact it's not just the time period – we analyse the specific medium we're going for too."

"Some tracks deliberately finish earlier than you want them to, like actual cues in older soundtracks where they've been ripped out of much longer original masters that nobody ever gets to hear."

"There are quite a few influences on this record. Carpenter is kind of an easy reference point for most people though I'd say the main ones would be Fabio Frizzi , John Harrison and Mark Isham. We're very much into grim 70s and 80s movie soundtracks so there are maybe nods to composers such as Stefano Mainetti , Riz Ortolani, Paul Giovanni, Wendy Carlos , even Michael Nyman."

"There's actually more use of subliminals on this record than on any previous album we've done, so we're interested to see what people will pick up on."

""It's not post-apocalyptic so much as it is about an inevitable stage that lies in front of us. But it's better if listeners find the narrative themselves, in the titles and the sounds."

"Our listeners seem to be really cool, savvy types of people. They didn’t let us down."

"In the studio we still spend a huge amount of time destroying the sounds in our music, though on this record we wanted to use older electronic instruments in the kind of well-produced, precisely orchestrated ways that film composers did back in the late seventies and eighties."

Marcus Eoin
Marcus Eoin

"We're based in Scotland, although some of the early sketches on this record were done in New Zealand. We have a main studio that is literally on a farm surrounded by deer and rabbits."

"In fact if you look again at the San Francisco skyline on the cover it's actually a ghost of the city. You're looking straight through it."

"We've been busy in our rehearsal space lately, so never say never."

"It’s about finding something beautiful in desolation, something draws us to the atmosphere of destroyed, abandoned places. It’s a bitter-sweet thing that we’ve always tried to achieve in our music. It seems too obvious to make music that is just purely dark, that just seems too easy and naïve."

"I hope that it works to make the listener pause and consider where we are right now, where we’re going… I guess it’s essentially a political album, but we shouldn’t spell it all out, it’s important that the listener finds their own thing in there."

"We were involved with the art direction and we helped devise some of the ideas but we had a really great team of people helping us to make it all happen. We really wanted to bring back a feeling of anticipation for new music that has largely been lost in recent years, mainly because of the internet."

"We’d be making music anyway even if nobody was listening, and we’ve no intention of stopping, so this is just a continuation."

Themes
The following divisions will address some of the primary themes found throughout Tomorrow's Harvest:

Apocalyptic
*Many people have reported that the album feels cold and desolate. This album is generally viewed as having the apocalypse as its main theme although the brothers have said in an interview that it is "everything but apocalyptic"
*The artwork features a dead animal carcass.
*It also features road signs such as a U-turn, a No U-turn allowed and a runaway truck ramp. One could make the assumption that this means we as a civilization have to turn around but we can't. Making us a runaway truck waiting to crash.

Division and Duality
*A sun can be seen splitting into 3 suns at the end of the "Reach For The Dead" video.
*The album is composed of two vinyls.
*The palindromic nature of this album leaves each tracks with their own counterparts.
*Some track titles also follow the theme of division:
**"Gemini"
**"Collapse"
**"Split Your Infinities"
**"Come To Dust"

Communication and Transmissions
*Mercury, the ruling planet of gemini, is known as “The Messenger of the Gods” and is all about communication.
*Part of the album announcement featured transmissions/Number stations/The cosecha transmission website.
*One of the track is titled "Transmisiones Ferox".
*The album is sprinkled with a lot of shortwave radio samples.
*"New Seeds" begins with sounds alike those heard when a cellphone loses signal.
*The artwork features communication towers.

Trivia
* The cover art is the skyline of San Francisco as seen from the runway at the old Alameda Naval Air Station.
**The Alameda Naval Air Station is where the show MythBusters tests many of their myths which require a large open area or empty road longer than a mile.
** purgruv from the Twoism (messageboard) found the original source picture of the artwork.

* The vinyl release is two discs long:
** Disc 1, side 1 includes Gemini, Reach For The Dead, White Cyclosa, Jacquard Causeway
** Disc 1, side 2 includes Telepath, Cold Earth, Transimiones Ferox, Sick Times, Collapse
** Disc 2, side 1 includes Palace Posy, Split Your Infinities, Uritual, Nothing Is Real, Sundown
** Disc 2, side 2 includes New Seeds, Come To Dust, Semena Mertvykh
* One of the vinyl sleeve's images is the inverted/upside-down number 822
** The number 822 may actually refer to Genesis 8:22, which states, "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease."
** 822 may also refer to the "last interactive login" on the cosecha-transmisiones website. The login date is 22-AUG-1996 02:57. The North American date would be written as AUG-22 or 8/22. The significance of this date is still under speculation.
* Another sleeve image is a broken sign with only the letter G visible. This may refer to the G of Christian/Masonic Gnosticism, which is the belief system of the revelation of God through enlightened personal experience instead of religious dogma. The revelations of both God and Satan are recurring themes in BoC's works.
* The CD release of the album says "I OVERFLOW MAN" around its rim. One anagram of this is "Owl of Minerva," which, in greek mythology, represents wisdom, and accompanies Athena, goddess of wisdom. A quote of Georg Hegel's connects true wisdom of a culture with its impending destruction.

When philosophy paints its gloomy picture then a form of life has grown old. It cannot be rejuvenated by the gloomy picture, but only understood. Only when the dusk starts to fall does the owl of Minerva spread its wings and fly.

* The album's total running time is 62:07. 6+2+0+7=15 1+5=6
From an episode of the British television game show Blockbusters:
* Kathy: "Okay, I'll have a 'W' then please, Bob."
* Bob: "'W'. What 'W' was the name of Bob Marley's group?" (buzzer) "Wah ha ha ha ha! Everybody worked for it, Kathy got there"
* Kathy: "Waltzer."
* Bob: "Yes it is! Waltzer. Gosh you took a chance. Well done!" (bell) "And for those who don't know, that's the one that...people are spun round as it revolves. It's a waltzer. And you've got the choice."
* Kathy: "I'll have the 'M' please, Bob."
* Bob: "The 'M'. Yes, you may. What 'M' is a garden flower whose bright orange petals are u-- Yes, Sarah."
* Sarah: "Football"
* Bob:"That's it! That's perfect! You've done it! Terrific! Well done. Wowee, I was a little bit worried there. You did it, and here's the big prize, Kathy. Take a look at this; you're gonna love it."

Trivia
* The episode it is from was partially cut. "Football" is not a garden flower and Waltzer is not Bob Marley's group. And usually someone who wins a prize on Blockbusters do so with the Gold Run which does not require the press of a button.
* The game show is notable for its game board composed of hexagons.
* The flower with bright orange petals is likely a Marigold.
* This is the UK version of Blockbusters hosted by Bob Holness between 1983 and 1993 with some seasons after '93 but they were not on ITV
* Kathy: "Okay, I'll have a 'W' then please, Bob."
* Bob: "'W'. What 'W' was the name of Bob Marley's group?" (buzzer) "Wah ha ha ha ha! Everybody worked for it, Kathy got there"
* Kathy: "Waltzer."
* Sarah: "Football"
* Bob:"That's it! That's perfect! You've done it! Terrific! Well done. Wowee, I was a little bit worried there. You did it, and here's the big prize, Kathy. Take a look at this; you're gonna love it."
** “Ring a Ring o’ Roses” is a folksong and singing game that was first published in 1881 in England. Although first published in 1881 only, it is believed that the tune of the song was well known at least one hundred years before as well. A very similar German nursery rhyme and singing game was already published in the 18th century. There is a theory that the lyrics would depict the Great Plague, but this was proved to be unfounded, as this claim originated in the 20th century and was based upon the modern version of the lyrics, not the original ones.
Ring a ring o’ roses
A pocketful of posies
a-tishoo, a-tishoo
We all fall down.

*The combination of Latin and Spanish in the title of the song causes my mind to find a connection in the Iberian Peninsula where, in tracing the applicability of the thought I find that with respect to Bell Beaker culture "Gordon Childe interpreted the presence of its characteristic artefact as the intrusion of "missionaries" expanding from Iberia along the Atlantic coast, spreading knowledge of copper metallurgy. Stephen Shennan interpreted the artefacts as belonging to a mobile cultural elite imposing itself over the indigenous substrate populations." Portugal has also been identified as one of the early centers from which agriculture and European Megalith culture spread. This is all prior to the end of the Chalcolithic age, the first step in the copper-bronze-iron progression which saw the dawn writing, of large (and bloody) empires, and eventually laid the groundwork for mathematics and astronomy. The Peninsula was also the site of extended conflicts between Rome and other cultures, quite notably the second Punic War, and was eventually conquered and renamed Hispania.
*The track features a prominent female vocal sample repeating "Nineteen-ninety-nine", as the sample is layered upon itself multiple times it begins to sound like the word "Dying" is being repeated.
** This female voice could possibly also be saying "nineteen ninety-five", with the recurrence of simultaneous "ni-" and fi-" creating the illusion of the word "dying".
**It may also be worthwhile to note that the vocal sample seems to begin looping at the very beginning of the phrase. On the second occasion especially it can be heard as "nineteen nineteen five-five-five..." or "nineteen nineteen dying dying dying....".

*Starting at around 1:59 a slowed down female voice can be heard saying something resembling "The others." This, when reversed sounds like "They're outside." This sample is repeated until the end of the track.
About 1:20 in the synth beat morphs into a heartbeat or possibly two heartbeats, maybe from an ultrasound.

Trivia
*Transmisiones is a Spanish word meaning "Transmissions".
*Ferox is a Latin word meaning "fierce" or "aggressive".
*The title may be a reference to the film 'Cannibal Ferox' (Lenzi, 1981).
* "Ferox" maybe an abbreviation for "ferric oxide", used in the manufacture of magnetic tape.
Trivia
* The end of this song contains the "Cosecha" jingle, as heard on the original 6 records, as well as the other number transmissions.
* The song has a motif that also occurs in Audiotrack 14 of Random_35_Tracks_Tape.

This album is generally viewed as having the apocalypse as its main theme.
*The artwork features a dead animal carcass
*It also features road signs such as a U-turn, a No U-turn allowed and a runaway truck ramp. One could make the assumption that this means we as a civilization have to turn around but we can't. Making us a runaway truck waiting to crash.

Division and Duality
*A sun can be seen splitting into 3 suns at the end of the Reach For The Dead video.
*The album is composed of two vinyls.
*The palindromic nature of this album leaves each tracks with their own counterparts.
*Some track titles also follow the theme of division:
**Gemini
**Collapse
**Split Your Infinities
**Come To Dust

Communication and Transmissions
*Mercury, the ruling planet of gemini, is known as “The Messenger of the Gods” and is all about communication.
*Part of the album announcement featured transmissions/Number stations/The cosecha transmission website.
*One of the track is titled Transmission Ferox.
*The album is sprinkled with a lot of shortwave radio samples.
*New Seeds begins with sounds alike those heard when a cellphone loses signal.
*The artwork features communication towers

* The album's total running time is 62:07. 6+2+0+7=15 1+5=6
Comments
* Skytree observed the following:
** "Gemini": track one
** "Gemini": May 21 - June 20
** Dredging up of the subconscious mind.
** This past weekend saw the last of three eclipses of 2013 (until the Fall), ending in "Gemini".
** Music Has The Right To Children: "Aquarius". Both "Aquarius" and "Gemini" are air signs.
** Much of BoC's video imagery involves flying through the air.
** -- end transmission --
* I read a review (sorry, someone else needs to edit this post to properly cite the reference) noting that Gemini are twins, and suggesting that separation (or invisible, maybe inevitable) connections might be a recurring Tomorrow's Harvest theme. (e.g., Split Your Infinities, Last Rites Of Spring/"Twin gods of death at the end of the tunnel", Beckett's Ghost Trio, Virgil's Aeneid, & Dante's Divine Comedy)
**Many others' comments focus on palindromes, suggesting cycles in the tracks' sequence.
* The track, and therefore the album begins with a short trumpet vignette. In the Bible, the Book of Revelation says that the end of times - the apocalypse - would be heralded with the sounding of trumpets. This fits in with the themes and motifs of the album.
* Embers observed the following quote: "From the Twins come less laborious callings and a more agreeable way of life, provided by varied song and voices of harmonious tone, slender pipes, the melodies inborn in strings and the words fitted thereto: those so endowed find even work a pleasure. They would banish the arms of war, the trumpet's call, and the gloom of old age: theirs is a life of ease and unfading youth spent in the arms of love. They also discover paths to the skies, complete a survey of the heavens with numbers and measurements, and outstrip the flight of the stars: nature yields to their genius, which it serves in all things. So many are the accomplishments of which the Twins are fruitful." - Marcus Manilius (fl. 1st century AD), a Roman poet and astrologer, said of the Gemini twins in his poem Astronomica.
** Astronomica itself is a hexameter didactic poem.
*** The number 6 and associated symbolism (primarily, hexagons) is a recurring item in Boards of Canada's music.
*** Didactic refers to something that is "intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive." - Tomorrow's Harvest could be interpreted as didactic, commentating on how our current behaviours affect ourselves, our environment and inform our future (direct instruction / teaching), but also providing an opportunity for self-reflection, reparations and a path to salvation (moral instruction - "a more agreeable way of life", "banish the arms of war", "life of ease...in the arms of love").
** Specific sub-quotes can be said to refer to the Boards of Canada's themselves, imagery of flying or other representations of air, cycles, technological sophistication, destruction, life, death, apocalypse, etc. See user's post for some interpretations.
At 2:52 you can hear in the left channel the words "Does anybody copy me?" followed by "Roger" at 2:55. It becomes more recognizable played 25% slower.
Trivia
* Gemini was an American spaceflight program from 1962-1966.

*Gemini is a subcritical nuclear test project ran by The National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA). The NNSA runs the U.S. nuclear warhead program.

*Gemini (♊) is also the third astrological sign in the Zodiac. Gemini were twin brothers, and therefore, could be a symbolic reference to the Sandison brothers themselves, even though they are not identical.

*Gemini can be also a direct reference to Gemini Films, a film production and distributor. The duo already made a small reference to them, when they sampled the ending of the 1982 adult film titled "A Brief Affair" on One Very Important Thought.

*In Ancient Greek mythology Gemini are Castor and Pollux, twin gods who are associated with Venus in its role as the morning and the evening star, and whose attestation dates back to an earlier reconstructed Indo-European myth of the Divine Twins, who are descendants of the Sky-God Dyēus and brothers/consorts/rescuers to the Dawn. They are responsible for carrying the sun through the sky each day and said to rescue mortals from peril in battle and at sea.
Occasionally referred to as '5d' despite there being little basis for this assumption other than the length of the track being similar to that of a known track length of an unreleased song.

The video below for "5d" is a part of the official BoC playlist selected by BoC which DOES give credence to track A06 being 5d.
*The initial sample in this track, lasting the duration of the piece, is a pitch/speed-altered version of the base sample for the track "Seven Forty Seven" released as part of the Warp20 (Unheared) compilation.
* It also plays a very light sample, around 3 minutes 20 seconds in, of a woman with a southern American accent apparently pulling up to a drive-through fast food ordering microphone and asking "Yes, what comes with, uh, chicken fingers?" This same sample is played in the background of "Dave (I'm A Real Traditionalist)".
* At 04:04, a voice that appears to say: "Too good, too clean, true ... [unintelligible]", or possibly "Too good to have been true".
* When sped up, the choir from Staircase Whip can be heard.
