Onanon:

[[:User:Onanon|Onanon]] is the monniker of Jasper Wiegers. He closely follows [[Boards of Canada]] since 1996. He shared multiple pictures through Discogs, taken during [[BoC]]'s live performance at [[Warp10]] at the Truman Brewery London, on November 5th 1999.
(Respecting [[Boards of Canada]]'s wishes, he won't share the hi-resolution pictures.)

From 1991 to 1999 [[:User:Onanon|Onanon]] contributed interviews and reviews for different Dutch music magazines such as Bassic Groove and Update Magazine. A bunch of (exclusive) dj mixes were available at Dutch national broadcaster VPRO 3voor12.

From 1998 [[:User:Onanon|Onanon]] organized events in the Netherlands (Phreakz!?, Distronics and other organisations), promoting artists from different high quality electronic music labels including Warp, Rephlex, Skam and others. (Being closely in touch with Warp's Plaid since Black Dog Productions.) His recordlabel Prospect Recordings is asleep since 2005.

[[:User:Onanon|Onanon]] is dj-ing since 1984 and presents a wide range of (electronic) styles. Nowadays you'll mostly find him playing at 'underground' events, where he feels comfortable and valued.

[[Inferno]] is the fifth studio album by [[Boards of Canada]], released on May 29th, 2026, via [[Warp Records]]. It comes thirteen years after their previous album, ''[[Tomorrow's Harvest]]'', the band's longest gap between albums to date. Departing from the cold, desolate, and apocalyptic nature of its predecessor, Inferno marks a return to the warmth of the duo's earlier works and arguably the ''[[Old Tunes saga]]'', mixing the occult ridden cryptic darkness of ''[[Geogaddi]]'', the warmth and nostalgia of ''[[Music Has The Right To Children]]'', and the organic guitar instrumentation of ''[[The Campfire Headphase]]''. Inferno is without a doubt [[Boards of Canada]]'s darkest album since ''[[Geogaddi]]''. Its themes reference death, rebirth, religion, magic, science, and many more.

About a week after, posters with imagery reminiscent of the band started appearing in multiple places around the UK and US. == Title and Themes ==

As a word, ''Inferno'' references hell and places reminiscent of it. It is the most explicit reference to religion and the occult since their 2002 album ''[[Geogaddi]]'' and 2000 EP ''[[In a Beautiful Place out in the Country (release)|In a Beautiful Place out in the Country]]''. The album's titles also heavily refer to concepts in cosmology and physics.

* An "[[Introit]]" is a song or psalm that is sung or recited at the beginning of a Christian mass.
* "[[Father And Son]]" could reference the Holy Trinity, which consists of the two and The Holy Spirit.
* "[[The Word Becomes Flesh]]" is a quotation from [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%201:14&version=NIV verse 1:14] of the Gospel of John.
* "[[Naraka]]" references the realm of hell seen in Indian religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism.
* "[[The Process]]" could refer to the Process Church of the Final Judgement, a new religious movement which briefly existed in the 1960s and 70s. ''The Process'' was the title of their magazine.
* "[[Prophecy At 1420 MHz]]" references the hydrogen line, a specific wavelength of radiation emitted by hydrogen as it undergoes a quantum transition. It has been used to investigate the properties of the universe, and search for extraterrestrial life.
* "[[Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan]]" refers to the first three elements of the periodic table and the mythical sea creature.
* "[[Age Of Capricorn]]" refers to the tenth sign of the astrological zodiac, and is the astrological age that follows the Age of Aquarius. The symbol of capricorn is the goat, which is symbolic in christian and pre-christian beliefs.
* "[[I Saw Through Platonia]]" could refer to a concept by Julian Barbour of a realm called Platonia, which contains every possible configuration of the universe.

IT'S HARD TO GET TO KNOW SOMEONE when they insist on only meeting in [[wikipedia:Cyberspace|cyberspace]]. You lose the subtleties of sighs and smiles, the giveaways of grins and grimaces, and how much tip they leave on the table. There's much less demeanor in a mouse click.

Then again, online exchanges have the ability to show bone, cutting right through the skin of small talk. Internet conversations can actually be illuminating experiences. But it takes more than listing your favorite books and movies on [[wikipedia:MySpace|MySpace]] to be able to make something as mechanical as a computer express something as incorporeal as a personality - much like it takes more than keystrokes to create music that connects with people, emotionally.

"[[Chromakey Dreamcoat]]"? I've Googled, I've deconstructed. I've imagined - how do I know if I'm on the right track? And what if I choose my own adventure or come to a different conclusion? Do I still get a prize?

Het duo [[Boards of Canada]] omgeeft zich met mysterie en symboliek. Met hun ''[[The Campfire Headphase|nieuwste album]]'' breken ze met die traditie....

[[Boards of Canada]], dat zijn twee hippies uit een obscure commune ergens in de Schotse hoogvlakten. Muziek en albumhoezen zetten ze vol met occulte symboliek. [[Gigs|Optreden]] doen ze maar één keer per jaar; tijdens de midzomernacht bij een groot kampvuur, omgeven door louter vrienden en bekenden. En hun studio bevindt zich in een geheime bunker.

‘Ik begrijp ook niet waar al die verhalen vandaan komen,’ zegt [[Mike Sandison]], helft van dit elektronische producersduo, een frisse dertiger in hip t-shirt, wijde broek en met een verzorgde coupe. Voor hem op tafel in een trendy eettentje in [[wikipedia:Edinburgh|Edinburgh]] – macrobiotisch, dat wel – staat een fles bier.

‘Een commune? Ik woon gewoon in een dorpje op het platteland. Daar wonen inderdaad bevriende kunstenaars, maar voor het merendeel gewoon mensen die er zijn geboren en getogen.’ En die bunker?

‘Nonsens,’ zegt [[Marcus Eoin]]. ‘Ik heb ooit eens in een interview gezegd dat we zo geconcentreerd werken dat onze studio wel een bunker lijkt. Zo gaat alles een eigen leven leiden.’

Hadden ze maar vaker interviews moeten geven.

‘Nee, de muziek moet voor zichzelf spreken. Zie ons als de persoon die in een volle kamer meestal zijn mond houdt. Áls hij dan iets zegt, luistert iedereen,’ zegt [[Mike Sandison]] (1971).
Daarom hebben ze ook nooit verteld dat ze eigenlijk broers zijn – de tweede voornaam van [[Marcus]] (1973) is [[Eoin]]. ‘Dan zou het alleen daarover gaan.’

Waarom ze nu dan toch naar buiten treden? [[Mike]]: ‘Het ging gewoon te ver. Niemand had het nog over onze muziek.’

En die wonderschone muziek verdient inderdaad alle aandacht. Eist die ook bijna, delicaat als ze is. [[Boards of Canada]] bouwt nummers laag over laag op – soms met ritmisch tinkelende belletjes, dan weer met flarden kinderstemmen (of zijn het nou elfjes?). De sprookjesachtige melodieën vlijen zich door hun complexe structuur pas na vele luistersessies in je hoofd, om daar voor altijd te rusten.

Het is onaardse muziek waarbij je al snel vergeet hoe lang de nummers duren, en of je nog steeds naar hetzelfde nummer luistert. Maar noem hun muziek niet aangenaam, of erger nog, rustgevend.

‘Alsof we onze muziek maken om yoga-oefeningen op te doen bij een zonsondergang. Fuck off!’ zegt [[Mike]].

Het laatste wat ze willen is ‘perfecte popmuziek’ maken, aldus [[Marcus]]. ‘Dat hoef je maar één keer te horen om het te begrijpen.’

Ze willen juist muziek maken die langzaam bezit van je neemt, als een jeukpoeder; door hun muziek vol te stoppen met tempowisselingen, dissonanten en onverwachte effecten.

‘Ken je dat gevoel als je in een groot warenhuis bent en de muziek van twee verschillende winkels door elkaar hoort, en het klopt op de een of andere manier? Ik weet, het gebeurt maar zelden. Maar dat gevoel van vervreemding, daar streven we naar.’

Wat ze ook niet willen, is opdringerige muziek maken. ‘Van die deathmetal-gasten met hun zwarte mascara bijvoorbeeld, dat is sáááái.’

Hun grootste inspiratiebron vormden de wazige natuurdocumentaires van de [[wikipedia:National Film Board of Canada|National Film Board of Canada]] uit de jaren zeventig; daar groeiden ze mee op voordat ze naar Schotland verhuisden. Hun optredens gaan vergezeld van verstilde videobeelden.

‘Laatst hoorde ik onze muziek onder een BBC-documentaire,’ zegt [[Marcus]]. ‘En wat pas echt cool was: het ging over criminaliteit, met heftig geweld en drugs erbij.’

Dat ze zo zelden optreden heeft een pragmatische reden. ‘We gebruiken geen software maar alleen synthesizers en analoge apparatuur,’ begint [[Mike]]. (‘Daar hebben we er ook eentje van in de studio,’ valt zijn broer in de rede, terwijl hij wijst naar de gedateerde cassetterecorder op tafel.)

[[Mike]] gaat verder: ‘Dus als we willen optreden, moeten we de hele studio afbreken, in een grote truck laden en vervolgens weer opbouwen op het podium. Dat kost veel geld, wat we niet hebben. En wat als de apparatuur kapotgaat? Of wordt gejat?’

Met het debuutalbum ''[[Music Has the Right to Children]]'' (1998) op het prestigieuze label [[Warp]] vestigde het duo in één keer zijn naam. Een status die in 2002 werd bevestigd met ''[[Geogaddi]]''. Vooral dit psychedelische album zat boordevol cryptische verwijzingen, met songtitels als "[[Music Is Math]]" en een speelduur van exact 66 minuten en zes seconden. Al moet aan die symboliek niet te zwaar worden getild. ‘Vaak waren het binnenpretjes.’

Toch zaten er ook politieke statements tussen, bijvoorbeeld door de herkomst van een sample of een songtitel. ‘Maar het mag nooit afleiden van de muziek.’

Vandaar dus een songtitel als "[[The Devil Is In The Details]]"? Het antwoord bestaat uit een smalende glimlach op beide gezichten.

Het nieuwe album ''[[The Campfire Headphase]]'' breekt met deze traditie. ‘We wilden terug naar de basis: de muziek.’ En ook die klinkt aardser, door invloeden van folk en vervormde elektrische gitaren. De ritmes zijn simpeler en dominanter.

‘We gaan terug naar onze muzikale roots. In de jaren tachtig speelden we in allerlei bandjes new wave en industrial. Pas in de jaren negentig zijn [[Marcus]] en ik doorgegaan als [[Boards of Canada]].’

Misschien was dit album wel te persoonlijk om vol te stoppen met details. ‘Nu iedereen ons kent, kunnen we weer terug naar ons rustige leventje op het platteland.’

[[Boards of Canada]] are two hippies from an obscure commune somewhere in the [[wikipedia:Scottish Highlands|Scottish Highlands]]. They fill their music and album covers with occult symbolism. They perform only once a year — during midsummer night, around a large bonfire, surrounded only by friends and acquaintances. And their studio is located in a secret bunker.

“I don’t understand where all those stories come from,” says [[Mike Sandison]], one half of the electronic producer duo — a lively guy in his thirties wearing a hip T-shirt, loose trousers, and a neat haircut. On the table in front of him in a trendy [[wikipedia:Edinburgh|Edinburgh]] restaurant — macrobiotic, of course — sits a bottle of beer.

“A commune? I just live in a small village in the countryside. Sure, there are some artist friends living there, but mostly just people who were born and raised there.” And that bunker?

“Nonsense,” says [[Marcus Eoin]]. “Once, in an interview, I said that we work so intensely that our studio feels like a bunker. And then that story took on a life of its own.”

They should have given interviews more often.

“No, the music has to speak for itself. Think of us as the person in a crowded room who usually keeps quiet. When he finally does say something, everyone listens,” says [[Mike Sandison]] (born 1971).

“As if we make music for yoga sessions at sunset. Fuck off!” says [[Mike]].

The last thing they want to make is “perfect pop music,” says [[Marcus]]. “You only need to hear that once to get it.”

Instead, they want to make music that slowly takes hold of you, like an itch powder — by filling their tracks with tempo shifts, dissonances, and unexpected effects.

“You know that feeling when you’re in a big department store and you hear the music from two different shops overlapping — and somehow it works? I know, it rarely happens. But that feeling of alienation — that’s what we’re after.”

What they also don’t want is pushy music. “Those [[wikipedia:Death metal|death metal]] guys with their black mascara, for example — that’s so boring.”

Their greatest inspiration came from the hazy nature documentaries of the [[wikipedia:National Film Board of Canada|National Film Board of Canada]] from the 1970s; they grew up with those before moving to [[wikipedia:Scotland|Scotland]]. Their live shows are accompanied by tranquil video imagery.

“I recently heard our music used in a BBC documentary,” says [[Marcus]]. “And what was really cool: it was about crime, with violence and drugs.”

Perhaps this album was simply too personal to pack with hidden details. “Now that everyone knows who we are, we can return to our quiet life in the countryside.”

[[Marcus]] agrees: “It’s time we started making music again.”
