The IDM list was originally created in August of 1993 for the discussion of music relating to Aphex Twin and Warp's early "Artificial Intelligence" compilations. Since that time, both the list and the range of music that is discussed on it have grown considerably. In the earlier days, a number of IDM artists themselves read and posted on the list. While it is still active today, the emergence of other forums such as WATMM and Xltronic have lessened its importances, and its traffic is considerably lower than its hey-day in the 90s and early 00s.

SoulSeek was originally started by members of the IDM list as a means to share hard-to-find electronic music.
