  • Another Alaskan village, with evidence of habitation since about 600 BC. Point Hope was named by Captain Frederick Beechey of the HMS Blossom in 1826 in honor of a friend. The native inhabitants refused to let white men build a whaling station there in the 19th century; their determination was seen again in the 20th century; it prevented the planned detonation of five nuclear bombs 31 miles from Point Hope in the 1960's from being carried out.
