The Magic Window is a Discord server centered around Boards of Canada. As of August 2025, it has 569 members making it one of the largest existing BoC communities online and the largest hosted on Discord.
Contents
History[edit]
First Iteration[edit]
The Magic Window was created on 22 May 2019 by user ax. A short time after, ownership was transferred to Milesium-487 who would remain the server's most prominent and longest owner. Later that same year, the server's current icon was created by server member & administrator phin.
The server experienced its first substantial growth in membership between 2020 and 2021, reaching over 400 members in its peak. This growth culminated in the 28 September 2021 incidents in which then-owner Milesium's account was hacked and the server was hijacked to promote scams. The old server has been archived in its entirety, but is private.
Second Server[edit]
The second server launched on 28 September 2021, after the incident that took place earlier in the day, courtesy of TheStatPow, Sixtynoner, and Puritycontrol (Purity for short). Since then, the server has become a wonderful community in a beautiful place out on the interwebs, greatly contributing to BOC lore, becoming a hub for discussion and debate, as well as a nest for up and coming producers who honor BOC's art and ethos via their own interpretations.
On 2 December 2022, Milesium resigned from his position as server owner. The server is now owned by the user 1(90).png.
Culture[edit]
The server has a colorful mix of attitudes, running gags, and layered references to past events that can in some moments come off as crude or blunt. Beware the friendly strangers ;) but we are reasonable people. There are multiple channels dedicated to various subjects where users from the community generate content for the community. Listed below are main channels to get yourself familiar with.
BOC Discussion[edit]
So many contributions from community-lead investigations have unearthed a plethora of lore, samples, sound design techniques, and much much more, from references upon references about the band and the things they express in their music, to samples once widely considered unknown in origin. This channel is also the stage for debates, reflection on the current state of things, and revision on the authenticity of new findings.
