The Magic Window

The Magic Window is a Discord server centred around Boards of Canada. As of mid June 2026, it has 1447 members making it one of the largest existing BoC communities online hosted on Discord.

History[edit]

First Iteration[edit]

The Magic Window was created on 22 May 2019 by user ax. A short time after, ownership was transferred to Milesium-487 who would remain the server's most prominent and longest owner. Later that same year, the server's current icon was created by server member & administrator phin.

The server experienced its first substantial growth in membership between 2020 and 2021, reaching over 400 members in its peak. This growth culminated in the 28 September 2021 incidents in which then-owner Milesium's account was hacked and the server was hijacked to promote scams. The old server has been archived in its entirety, but is private.

Second Server[edit]

The second server launched on 28 September 2021, after the incident that took place earlier in the day, courtesy of TheStatPow, Sixtynoner, and Puritycontrol (Purity for short). Since then, the server has become a wonderful community in a beautiful place out on the interwebs, greatly contributing to BOC lore, becoming a hub for discussion and debate, as well as a nest for up and coming producers who honour BOC's art and ethos via their own interpretations.

On 2 December 2022, Milesium resigned from his position as server owner. The server is now owned by the user 1(90).png.

Culture[edit]

The server has a colorful mix of attitudes, running gags, and layered references and jokes to past events that can in some moments come off as crude or blunt. Beware the friendly strangers ;) but we are reasonable people. There are multiple channels dedicated to various subjects where users from the community generate content for the community. Listed below are main channels to get yourself familiar with.

General[edit]

The main hub where users interact about anything not tied exclusively to Boards of Canada. Users here can freely discuss whatever as long as they abide by the rules. Along with #BOC-Discussion, this is one of the most active channels on the server, serving as the stage for shitposts, discussion, and contributions.

Users who go above and beyond to the wellbeing and culture of the server are awarded the Kanai Industries Approved role, and depending on the importance of their contribution, may even receive an honorary exclusive role for their efforts.

BOC Discussion[edit]

An incredible amount of contributions from community-lead investigations have unearthed a plethora of lore, samples, sound design techniques, and much much more, from references upon references about the band and the things they express in their music, to samples once widely considered unknown in origin. This channel is also the stage for debates, reflection on the current state of things, and revision on the authenticity of new findings.

A few notable examples are users Sixty and Purity's discovery of the source of the infamous sample "Although not a follower of David Koresh, she's a devoted Branch Davidian" as well as "come out and live with a religious community in a beautiful place out in the country" from the Mysteries, Magic & Miracles documentary series^[1], as well as Mansin's otherworldy recreation of "Echus"^[2], to name a few. This channel also played host to the unearthing of the Magnificent 11 and the lossless cassette rips of AFOT, OTV2 and Boc Maxima.

Users who demonstrate a profound expertise in BOC lore are awarded the Serbian Man Vol.1 role.

Music[edit]

If you're ever stumped or bored and want to hear something new, this section is the place for you. This section is replenished daily with users' favorite tracks and chunes from a multitude of places all over the net. Feel free to drop what you're listening to!

Share Your Music[edit]

The Magic Window was blessed with a constant stream of dedicated users who produce music on their own free time, experimenting in the solitude of their rooms exploring the sound that inspires them on such a profound level. In several occasions, the server unites to hear compilations made to showcase that music. These listening parties are hosted on the Voice Chat and have been known to last several days 24/7. The most prominent event is Magickfest, an online festival hosted by admin Sdoww and user Niski where users submit mixtapes or livesets to perform their art for us to enjoy. Despite 1(90).png being behind schedule, compilations after the event are created for users to revisit at their leisure. Users who contribute with their music are awarded the Music Makers role, with a selected few being awarded the BOCC Remaker Extraordinare role when being able to reproduce faithfully BOC's sound and provide technical input on the synthesis behind it.

Art/Media/Advertisement[edit]

This page tends to be filled with snippets of projects users are currently working on, from photographs that pay homage to the BOC aesthetic, a rare piece of media someone might consider special or promo their creative efforts in the IRL.

Users who contribute with their art, specifically photography or drawings, are awarded the Acid Memories role.

Memes/6 Hour Cooldown[edit]

Reddit[edit]

This channel serves as a probe into the Boards Of Canada subreddit, where users can discuss current happenings on the subreddit and express opinions that might not align with Subreddit rules/moderation.

This channel was also the birthplace of the now defunct Addison role, for leading reddit on a wild goose chase.

Trivia[edit]

Birthplace of the Micus meme, based on a misspelling/bastardisation of the word Marcus.
Fredd-E and Mark of bocpages.org and rareboc.org respectively, hold special exclusive roles in honour of their efforts to the BOC community in general.
Widely considered the most active BOC hub on the net, rivalled only by BOC Reddit.
Hexabot helps with user experience and automatic moderation. Orange!
TMW is often considered the most loosely moderated BOC-themed community, where even the moderation team participates in the jokes and gags. Its sister server, the Happy Cyclist Association (HCA), is considered for more serious, less playful conversation about BOC subjects despite being owned and heavily populated by TMW members.
In the waning years of the COVID pandemic, TMW music makers contributed to the creation of the Musik Mixtape, where user Cosecha eventually had them made into physical cassettes and was shared via mail across the world to participants and enthusiasts. Users who participated in these events were given the A04 role. This event is the precursor to Magickfest.
Given the amount of traffic and discussion, a bocpages forum fork was created to collaborate with discoveries and discussion. A Magic Forum was also created for #Art as to not loose a given subject to the ever flowing stream of messages in the channel.
