Deep time — the geological concept (coined in the modern sense by John McPhee, after James Hutton's 18th-century insight) for the vast scales on which the Earth changes. Contemplated religiously, deep time is the kalpa of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology — an aeon so long it functions as a figure for eternity.
