Revision as of 22:01, 22 April 2013

TL;DR

A mysterious Boards of Canada record was found at Other Music records in New York City. The cover reads simply as follows:

BOARDS OF CANADA

------ / ------ / ------ / XXXXXX / ------ / ------

The bottom of the cover bears a copyright notice dated "2013 WARP RECORDS LIMITED".

When played, the record contains approximately 40 seconds of audio, consisting primarily of a short set of chimes followed by a computer voice reciting six numbers, similar to a shortwave numbers station (such as the one sampled on "Gyroscope"). The numbers recited are 9 3 6 5 5 7.

Recording of the NYC record

According to a store employee, the record was hand-delivered by a Warp Records representative and is one of only 6 in the world. The rest are said to be all located outside the United States.

The code

The cover symbols, recited numbers and reported number of records suggest a 36-digit code, to be discovered when all 6 releases are found. Assuming the Xs indicate where the numbers on each release go, the partial code is as follows:

------ / ------ / ------ / 936557 / ------ / ------

At the 4min19sec mark in the video below, which is also part of their official YouTube channel, an annotation of this code has been added.

Please keep in mind that this "Julie And Candy" video was uploaded by user AtalantaFugiens, who only has this video on their channel. The version of this song seems to be a soundboard recording from one of Boards of Canada’s only live performances. Previously there was only a crowd recording available of this live set.
