  Trax è volato in Scozia per incontare Marcus Eoin e Mike Sandison. Verrebbe da non crederci, perché sono anni che i Boards Of Canada sono ammantati da una fitta coltre di mistero... 

Non si fanno (quasi) mai intervistare se non via mail, riempiono i propri dischi di significati esoterici e di richiami all’algebra estrema (la successione numerica di Fibonacci, tanto per dirne solo una), creano grafiche strane, lanciano segnali tanto inquietanti quanto di difficile interpretazione, vivono isolati in campagna. 
Cose così. Uno si aspetterebbe di trovarsi di fronte due druidi scontrosi e magari incappucciati, gente con cui è difficile fare una chiacchierata serena e disimpegnata. E invece: macché. Marcus e Mike sono due persone di notevole simpatia (ah, e riportiamo per chi se lo fosse fatto sfuggire lo scoop raccolto su Pitchfork da Heiko Hoffmann: i due sono fratelli, anche se non lo hanno mai voluto dire perché avevano paura agli inizi della loro carriera di essere considerati degli “Orbital di serie B”; è ironico come al giorno d'oggi in pochi si ricordino dei fratelli Hartnoll, mentre i Boards sono assolutamente sulla cresta dell'onda. Il risultato finale sono state due ore di intervista svoltasi, massì, in una chiesa sconsacrata di Edinburgo: niente di esoterico e di satanico, semplicemente uno dei pub più sciccosi della città. Per trascrivere tutto quello che ci si è detti, tra un sorriso e un altro, ci sarebbero volute tipo una ventina di pagine di Trax; troppo, anche per i Boards Of Canada. Ecco qua quindi una buona selezione di quanto ci siamo detti, tra passato e presente (con tanto di precisa chiave di lettura per comprendere lo spirito del loro ultimo lavoro, “The Campfire Headphase”). Incominciando, ed era inevitabile, dalla domanda sul perché i due sono così sfuggenti coi media: forse che i giornalisti sono tutti delle bestie?!

In effetti noi per lo più ci facciamo intervistare via mail. Dobbiamo dire però che questa ultima tornata di interviste, in cui stiamo incontrando le persone in carne e ossa, è proprio soddisfacente.}}

I giapponesi ad esempio sono meticolosi in un modo incredibile. Però ecco, la maggioranza non è che ci facesse esaltare.}}

Siamo stati noi a provocare un po’ questa meticolosità maniacale, giocando un po’ sul mistero un po’ sull’inserimento di elementi bizzarri nella nostra musica e nella sua struttura. Se la cosa ci è un po’ sfuggita di mano probabilmente è colpa di Internet, ammesso che si possa parlare di una colpa. E’ da decenni che varie band si divertono ad inserire questi messaggi più o meno subliminali nei loro dischi (nella musica o nella grafica), ma tutto ciò un tempo si diffondeva o attraverso passaparola o attraverso interviste sui giornali. Ora col web c’è una vera e propria esplosione comunicativa, le notizie (e le leggende!) circolano e si diffondono in una velocità e in una quantità prima inimmaginabile. Inimmaginabile anche per noi. Noi, inserendo tante piccole trovate semi-subliminali all’interno di “Geogaddi”, volevamo semplicemente spingere le persone ad ascoltare con attenzione la nostra musica: si sparge la voce che è possibile cogliere dei riferimenti non percepibili ad un primo superificiale ascolto, e così la gente è invogliata a riascoltare con più attenzione – questo è stato il nostro ragionamento. Comunque con questo nostro nuovo lavoro abbiamo dato un taglio a tutto questo; magari deluderemo qualcuno, ma non volevamo diventare la parodia di noi stessi.}}

{{boc|Ce ne sono state così tante! Chi parlava di successione di accordi predeterminata seguendo non so quali assurdi criteri (falso) o di messaggi strani percepibili solo ascoltando il cd da un computer (falso). E’ vero invece che non è casuale che il disco durasse sessantasei minuti. Però vedi, alla fine anche qua la spinta a questa scelta è stata prettamente provocata da questioni di, come dire?, etica musicale: noi sappiamo che oggi la musica si ascolta perlopiù in macchina, attraverso autoradio col caricatore di cd. In questo modo si passa direttamente da un cd all’altro senza pausa. Questa idea ci ha sempre intristito: per noi un album è un vero e proprio viaggio sonoro, un qualcosa che ha un inizio e ha una fine, troviamo abbastanza incivile che finito un album si passi subito ad un altro come se si passasse da una traccia all’altra all’interno di un singolo lp. Ed è così che è nata l’idea di mettere una lunga pausa alla fine dell’ultimo pezzo di “Geogaddi”, così almeno anche l’ascoltatore in macchina col carica cd si beccava la sua sana pausa, metteva un po’ di respiro tra l’ascolto del nostro disco e quello successivo. Quando l’ingegnere del suono che curava la masterizzazione ci ha chiesto quanto lunga volevamo fare la pausa, ecco, lì ci è venuta in mente l’idea di far durare complessivamente il disco raggiungendo questa cifra piena di sei.}}

E’ che abbiamo visto che succedevano cose ridicolo, tipo copie che circolavano su E-bay e partivano da una base d’asta di cinquemila sterline. Quando lo producemmo originariamente, lo facemmo uscire in poche copie non per chissà quale scelta ma semplicemente perché non ce ne potevamo permettere di più. Noi ancora oggi amiamo il materiale di “Twoism”, ci piacciono anche le sue ingenuità e crudezze; questo significa anche che non eravamo felici di vederlo circolare magari su mp3 dalla qualità discutibile. Più in generale, crediamo che nonostante sia musica con effettivamente già una decina d’anni alla spalle, riascoltata oggi sia ancora fresca interessante, ed oltre a questo è fondamentale per capire al meglio il nostro “mondo sonoro”, è un tassello fondamentale per ricostruire quel quadro che illustra al meglio quale musica abbiamo fatto in passato, quale facciamo adesso e quale potremmo fare in futuro. Ad ogni modo, quando è uscita la riedizione di “Twoism” abbiamo chiesto alla Warp di non essere troppo aggressiva con la promozione, non sarebbe stato onesto esserlo. E’ un disco che è uscito come “servizio” alla gente: per permetterle di conoscerci meglio, e per evitare che fosse depredata da speculatori.}}

Quando incidemmo queste cassette, internet non c’era ancora: l’unico modo per diffondere la nostra musica era fare cassettine per gli amici, ma questo in qualche modo era un processo che controllavi, bene o male sapevi dove finiva la tua musica, e se magari capitava nelle mani di qualcuno sconosciuto eri pure un sacco contento. Ecco, se all’epoca avessimo saputo che saremmo diventati così conosciuti magari saremmo stati un po’ più prudenti! Però dai, anche le nostre primissime cose, quelle di taglio quasi rock, non erano poi così pessime…}}

{{boc|Assolutamente no. Oggi, quando per un attimo smettiamo di essere i Boards Of Canada e invitiamo gli amici a fare musica con noi giusto per il divertimento di farlo, ci mettiamo quasi sempre a fare delle cose assurde, jam session deliranti dove mischiamo tutto, roba alla John Zorn tanto per capirci. Tutto ciò è molto salutare, ne abbiamo bisogno, sennò impazziremmo. Il progetto Boards Of Canada è infatti qualcosa che richiede un controllo totale ed assoluto su quello che si sta facendo, tutto ciò in ogni singolo passaggio creativo. Essere in più di due sarebbe impossibile, il processo creativo entrerebbe in stallo, bloccato dai reciproci perfezionismi e dalle reciproche manie di controllo. Quando eravamo in più di due, ad un certo punto si passava il tempo a discutere, non a fare musica. Non era possibile andare avanti. Ritrovarsi solo in due ha sbloccato tutto, la creatività è ripresa a fluire, e la nostra musica ha guadagnato respiro, è diventata molto cinematica.}}

Già accettare di fare un remix per lui è stato uno sforzo, perché questa cosa ci ha obbligato ad interrompere il lavoro in studio che stavamo facendo per “The Campfire Headphase”; però Beck è un artista che amiamo, non abbiamo avuto il coraggio di dirgli di no. Quando invece ti ritrovi ad avere a che fare col pop mainstream è un casino: Chris Cunningham ci ha raccontato che girare il video di “Frozen” per Madonna è stata un’esperienza allucinante. Amava fare un esempio davvero illuminante: per avere un po’ di caffé, dovevi parlare all’aiutante dell’assistente del vice responsabile alla produzione esecutiva, e solo allora – forse! – potevi sperare di vedere comprarire di fronte a te la tazza. Terribile. Non fa per noi. Noi andiamo bene per delle realtà piccole. Tanto più che ci teniamo a seguire i nostri tempi, che sono abbastanza lunghi e soprattutto tendono ad allungarsi in modo imprevisto. Quando invece sei impelagato in lavori mainstream, hai delle scadenze ineludibili che se non rispetti succede che vieni steso da penali mostruose.}}

John Frusciante, i Mercury Rev… Abbiamo comunque un principio fisso: non vorremmo mai finire su dischi dove i produttori sono più d’uno, dove si raccoglie in giro un fritto misto di gente, l’artista famoso chiede materiale a questo o a quello. Sono contesti pessimi, dove si perde completamente la tua identità. Eppure proprio questa è la tendenza, nel pop odierno.}}

Anni fa era diverso, eravamo meno sicuri in noi stessi e un po’ ci affidavamo a quello che ci dicevano i discografici. Per fortuna abbiamo invertito la rotta. Noi comunque siamo onesti. Non siamo dei manipolatori. Noi, fra un disco e l’altro scompariamo. Vogliamo che parli la musica. Quando si comincia a fare troppo marketing, l’ascoltatore un minimo esperto si secca e comincia a chiedersi se al musicista interessi di più la sua musica o il fatto di diventare famoso. Guardaci: se noi volessimo lavorare di più sul marketing, un’idea furba poteva essere quella di aprire centinaia di siti a nostro nome, di invadere il web. Si parlerebbe un sacco di noi! Invece se vai a dare un’occhiata al nostro sito, vedrai che è marcissimo, il peggiore lavoro in html che tu abbia visto in anni! Non è un caso: è che vogliamo far vedere chiaramente che non è nostro interesse vendere bene noi stessi, noi siamo concentrati sulla musica ed è lì che vogliamo si concentrino gli altri quando si tratta di giudicarci.}}
