Vol.4 - P. Primers - 177 Giraud's Mirror is a track released exclusively on a hexagonal flexi disc which was included with the Red 2LP vinyl edition of Inferno, Boards of Canada's fifth studio album which released in 2026.
The repeating garbled vocal sample in the track is sampled from the outro of a McDonald's training film from 1972.[1]
You have just one life to live
Make it rich with what you give
To your brother
The greatest gift is the smile you give
To your brother
At 0:50, 1:13, 1:37, 2:00, 2:24, 2:47, and 3:12, a heavily obscured, and reverberated voice either saying "Push" or "Punish" can be hear, which the distortion of the sample causes a kind of auditory illusion, making listeners either hear "Push" or "Punish".
The liner notes appear to refer to the "P. Primer trigger recordings" from the "MBI Institute" as mentioned in the promo VHS tapes.
The "MBI Institute" is also mentioned, along with the "Mass Behavioral Initiative," in the introductory audio for the Inferno Sessions.
Boards of Canada's fascination with numbers seems to pop up here. 177 has a few correlations but one of the more notable is that 177 is the smallest full 3x3 Magic Square, Magic Constant of distinct prime numbers.
